Concert Information

Join Martyn Brabbins and the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of new work SRI by composer (and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra trombonist) Dan Jenkins, and hear leading oboe player Emily Pailthorpe perform Richard Blackford’s two-movement oboe concerto The Better Angels of our Nature, inspired by Abraham Lincoln’s plea for reconciliation at his first inaugural address in 1861:

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.â€

The concert begins with Simon Wills’ colourful comedy Empress of Blandings and concludes with John Pickard’s dark and reflective symphonic poem Channel Firing, inspired by Thomas Hardy’s 1914 poem describing a night-time scene at a church graveyard.

Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that as not everyone who asks for tickets uses them, to make sure we have a full house we send out more tickets than there are places. We do our best to get the numbers right, but unfortunately we occasionally have to disappoint people so please arrive early.
