Esso in Milford Haven

Episode 2 of 6

Documentary charting how the Suez crisis in the 1950s led to the industrial resurgence of Milford Haven.

The fishing industry in Milford Haven was in decline in the late 1950s, but it was a crisis happening on the other side of the world that would provide the town with its next big industry. When Egypt's leaders closed the Suez canal to European ships carrying oil from the Far East, the new route around Africa required much bigger ships. Bigger ships required deep harbours and one of Britain's deepest was Milford Haven. On November 3 1960 Esso opened the first oil refinery on the Haven and this marked the beginning of another industrial era for the town.
