Pontins, Prestatyn

Episode 4 of 6

How Fred Pontin revolutionised holiday camp breaks with his self-catering camp in Prestatyn whose success formed the template for the holiday centres of today.

Holiday camps catering for thousands with organised activities and set mealtimes had provided great holidays for working people throughout the 1950s and 60s. But times changed with the competition of accessible foreign holidays and demands became more sophisticated. In 1971 Fred Pontin saw a way forward - he built a new holiday camp in Prestatyn with chalets where campers could cater for themselves. It proved a huge success and paved the way for the holiday centres we know today.
