Brahms: a sonata in Belfast and a symphony in Cardiff

Throughout this week we focus on the ѿý National Orchestra of Wales, travelling with them around the country and especially featuring the music of Welsh composer Grace Williams. Today, we hear her Sinfonia Concertante alongside the orchestra playing Brahms’s Fourth Symphony in its home venue: ѿý Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff.

There’s also Brahms from Belfast – his Clarinet Sonata No. 1 performed by former ѿý New Generation Artist Annalien van Wauwe with pianist Yannick Van de Velde. They also play the sonata by Polish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg.

Plus ѿý Radio 3’s 25 for 25: Sounds of the Century – a series of brand new commissions celebrating and commemorating some of the biggest events of the 21st century so far. Today, Heloise Werner marks the year 2019 with M87, a piece inspired by the first ever image of a black hole created by the Event Horizon Telescope.
