Gemma Cairney hosts a Notting Hill Carnival special and is joined by Caribbean storyteller, historian and artist Fiona Compton and mixed-media artist Alvaro Barrington.

Fiona Compton is from St. Lucia and has dedicated her life to amplifying the rich the history and culture of the wider region. She is an official ambassador for Notting Hill Carnival. She is the founder of Know Your Caribbean, a platform that has become the world’s premier resource for Caribbean history. The Know Your Caribbean Instagram account has nearly 500,000 followers and gives snapshots into Caribbean history that will “tell you things school books won’t”.

Alvaro Barrington is a London-based artist who grew up in Grenada, known for his vibrant mixed-media paintings that weave together Caribbean cultural motifs, personal history, and community celebration. He is currently promoting GRACE, a personal and immersive installation at Tate Britain running through January 2025. The installation transforms the Duveen Galleries into a vibrant, sensory-rich environment filled with sound, colour, and texture. Barrington draws from his Caribbean heritage, evoking scenes such as a thunderstorm pounding on a tin roof and the exuberance of Carnival. These elements are not just aesthetic — they are symbolic of identity, memory, and belonging.
