Kulan success
It was thought they once ranged across the whole of Asia, the kulan suffered a dramatic decline due to hunting and human settlements. In Russia, the Badkhyz Nature Reserve was set up to protect them and their numbers have risen from under 100 to over 3,000 individuals. In the spring, the stallions round up harems of mares for the mating season. A stallion gallops about and chases a succession of mares, trying to herd them together. There are also goitered gazelles on the plains, and there used to be cheetahs until the 1960s.
