Poisoner's pet
The nightshades are a dangerous family of flora, and full of poison. Their toxic effects have been studied for years and their names strike fear: deadly nightshade, bittersweet, datura and henbane. Henbane is an evil-looking, evil smelling, unpredictable inhabitant of beaches and disturbed places. Sticky and hairy, it is poisonous throughout. Hypnotic, hallucinogenic, it speeds the heart and brings delirium. lt was the plant that killed Hamlet's father and the one that provided the poison with which Dr Crippen murdered his wife.
