Wild harvest
The bramble is an unruly, grasping, ubiquitous weed but it keeps the city dweller in touch with the seasons. The flowers, borne in June, mark the arrival of summer. When the flowers fade and the fruit appears, summer is in its fading days. A spell of fine weather in September has been called 'blackberry summer', when the bramble bushes are at their most bountiful. It has provided us with an unofficial harvest for thousands of years. But it does not confine itself to the countryside. An opportunist, it will just as readily follow the seasons in the dust of towns.
