The change from winter to spring seems almost imperceptible. First to appear are the snowdrops, tough enough to push through frozen earth. Then there are the celandines, a feast for early bees. With trees still bare, wood anemones can grab the light - their flowers only opening in sunshine. But the season moves on fast. Leaves swell and cut light from the woodland floor. The early flowers, unable to tolerate the shade, race to bloom. Just as the shade begins fully to fall, spring's grand finale comes. Bluebells seem so familiar, yet no country in the world shares a wildflower spectacle like this. It is our own floral speciality.
