Rich pastures

Healthy coastal waters in the Mediterranean can have rich seagrass beds. The seagrass is called Posidonia. Seagrass beds are good feeding grounds and are nursery areas for many fish and shellfish, such as scorpion fish and grey mullet. The pinna (fan mussel) is the largest shell in Europe and lives only in seagrass beds. The Mediterranean seahorse also thrives here. All these species are dependent on the Posidonia. But all over the Mediterranean the Posidonia is dying, from sewage and other problems. David Attenborough goes scuba diving over a dying seagrass bed and demonstrates the pollution killing the Posidonia - the stems are covered in silt and muck and are dying.
