Lakeside birds
Shallow lakes and lagoons have largely gone from the Mediterranean coastal regions. But west of Bizerte in Tunisia lies Lake Ichkeul where half a million birds come to feed in winter. Nearly all of Europe's greylag geese come here each winter. Other vistors include avocets and redshanks. These wetlands are a vital wintering ground for ducks and geese, and an important stop off point for migrating waders. But Lake Ichkeul is under threat. Local people wish to construct dams to provide water for irrigation and tourism. If the lake is drained there will be nowhere for the birds to feed. This sequence was filmed in the 1980s.
