Rollers and European bee-eaters migrate to southern Europe from eastern Africa. A roller brings insects back to the nest for its chicks. The nest is in a hollow tree. Adult rollers usually eat big crunchy insects like beetles, but this pair is feeding their chicks on less crunchy food like dragonflies and antlions. Bee-eaters really do eat bees and wasps. One bashes a wasp on a branch to get rid of its sting. But they also feed on less dangerous insects, such as dragonflies. The bee-eaters have dug nest tunnels in a sandy bank with their beaks. A parent walks down the cramped tunnel to feed the brood of chicks. There is no room to turn around, so it has to reverse out again.
