Gumboot dance - an introduction
An introduction to the origins and basics of South African Gumboot dance with examples of taught rhythms and phrases. Dancer and choreographer H Patten gives a basic explanation of the origins of the style. He demonstrates how the boots and body parts are used to create the rhythms. We see a class being taught a selection of rhythms with corrections being given. The progress made within the space of an hour is demonstrated with the class responding in unison to the calls made.
