In 2018, Xia, at the age of 18, was selected from hundreds of entrants as one of the winners in the Senior category of the annual 蜜芽传媒 Young Composer Competition. As part of their prize they received a 蜜芽传媒 commission to write a piece for vocal ensemble VOCES8 to perform at the 蜜芽传媒 Proms. Earthward received its world premiere at the Cadogan Hall Prom on 22 July 2019, alongside music by Jonathan Dove and other influential choral composers.
