The carrots are making much better progress this year but be sure to keep them clear of weeds to ensure success and cover them with a fine mesh in order to keep the carrot fly away.
The broad beans have now reached hip height and the start of beans are visible. In order to discourage black fly it's time to take a scissors and nip the tip of the plant out. This also means the plant will put more of its energy into growing the beans.
The bee population are thriving on the plot, attracted by the large Limnanthes (poached egg plant).
The bed has been prepared for the leeks, Terry uses his family crowbar to make a hole ready for the plant and simply drops the young plants in along with some water, without filling in around it.
