West
London has given us some eminent music makers over the years - from
the Shepherds Bush masterblasters The Who to Ladbroke Grove's reggae
giants Aswad to those purveyors of The Sound Of The Westway, The
Clash...
"Such
is the energy spread across the new album that it reminds me
of first hearing the Happy Mondays all those years ago..." |
It's
also the side of the capital that's now thrown up the Audio Bullys,
who consist of two early
20-somethings... rhymester Simon Franks and DJ Tom Dinsdale.
Their
debut album 'Ego War' (released this week by those cool folk
at Source), is a wonderfully winnin' audio montage that's very rarely
off the turntable back at Crowley Castle. Which is always a good
sign.
It literally takes the listener on a genre-hopping, rhythmic magic
carpet ride, with influences veering from Masters At Work to the
Specials to the Beatles and the Pistols (such taste!).
in-yer-face
Such
is the energy spread across 'Ego War' that it reminds me
of first hearing the Happy Mondays and their 'Pills N Thrills
And Bellyaches' album all those years ago - fans of the Streets
would definitely get something from it too.
Personal
highlights include the punky, in-yer-face 'We Don't Care',
the Stereo MCs-sounding 'I Go To Your House', the Elvis Costello-sampling
'Way Too Long' and the wickedly funny '100 Million', while
the pumping 'Real Life' reveals a harder edge.
The accompanying biog proclaims that Audio Bullys are "the
ghost of the late, great Ian Dury getting down at Twice As Nice"
or "the sound of the Pistols if they rocked Ministry rather
than the 100 Club". Whoever wrote that, I think, could
just be right.
Step into their world, it's definitely worth checkin'....
