Volga Delta
In the spring, snow melting in the northerly reaches of Russia causes the Volga River to break its banks. The flood water fills fields with shallow water, covering huge areas of the countryside and depositing vast quantities of silt. Carp and other animals move into these areas to spawn, laying millions of eggs. This time of year is a feast for all the fish-eating birds of the area, providing for their young.
