Plankton feeders
During the June floods, the warm water of the Volga Delta stimulates the growth of planktonic animals, such as water fleas. A hydra catches a water flea. The plankton supports vast numbers of fish larvae, such as sticklebacks and carp. A male Caspian pipefish gives birth to small, live young, from his pouch. The baby pipefish swim around their father.
