Food shortage
Brown-headed gulls fly over Lake Karakul, high up in the Pamir Mountains. They are one of Russia's rarest birds, and these high altitude lakes are their only nesting sites. The adult gulls call and display to each other on the lake shore. Chicks beg for food. The sparse growth of weed in the lake is enough to support one species of fish, which in turn provides enough food for growing chicks. Two chicks push and shove each other as they try to get food from their parent. An adult pecks another's chick and is attacked by the parent. Female gulls beg for food as part of courtship, and a harassed male has both a chick and his mate begging from him.
