
Siberian Galapagos
Exploring the waters of Lake Baikal in Siberia. The lake bed is an eerie landscape of green and brown, with huge freshwater sponges growing up like coral formations. Many unique species live in the cold waters. Amongst the freshwater sponges hide a vast array of cottid fish, These have evolved into numerous types thanks to the millions of years of isolation, and giving Lake Baikal the nickname of the Galapagos of Siberia. Other inhabitants of the lake include the Baikal horse, a crustacean that carries rocks about, and the omul, a fish related to the salmon.
