Gang warfare
Male chimpanzees protect their territory from an intruder.
Male chimpanzees drum and call to each other around the valley as they prepare to go on a mission - a border patrol. They pound the huge buttress roots of trees like war drums. Even young Galahad is caught up in the excitement. They are heading to the southern border to protect their territory from neighbouring groups. When it comes to foreign policy all internal rivalries are forgotten. As they approach the boundary, some hangers-on have dropped back. From now on it‘s serious. This is an organised force with a specific goal - to keep strangers away from their patch. They scan the next valley - no man's land, where a small movement in the trees catches their eye. They move steadily and quietly. There’s a lone stranger around here somewhere - an easy target. He tries to escape, but it‘s too late - the patrol group is on to him. Their attack is unprovoked and vicious in the extreme, such is the power of 'gang' mentality. But who are we to judge such brutality? It seems that both humans and chimps share this darker side to their nature - this ability to consciously plan and execute a violent attack on another of their kind. Finally, they leave him to make his escape, but he’s so badly injured he may not survive. Back home, Frodo rests with his mother, nephew and youngest brother. He shows such tenderness with his family it’s hard to believe that he was capable of such aggression. Fortunately love is usually the more powerful force in our lives.
