Make love not war
Hidden away deep in the forests of central Africa there are chimpanzees where the females play a key role in politics and the secret of a harmonious social life is sex. Bonobos are sometimes called 'pygmy chimps'. In their society the females are in charge, and sex rather than violence is used to keep order. Most animals only have sex to have babies, but not bonobos. They use sex to cement relationships among the whole group, even the youngsters, and - unusually - they do it face to face. Sex is also used to reaffirm friendships and to settle disputes. If a male gets aggressive, some quick sex may soon calm him down.
