A quiet summer home
Summer drought and heat is the enemy of animals around the Mediterranean. Snails climb up bushes and seal their shells with mucus to keep the moisture in. In one secluded valley on the island of Rhodes, Jersey tiger moths gather in their millions to wait out the summer. Here there is shade and a stream to keep the air moist. A freshwater crab eats a moth it has caught, and some water boatmen feed on one that has blundered into the stream. David Attenborough visits the moths' summer shelter, but has to be careful not to disturb them with noise or sudden movement. The moths eat nothing for four months. If they are startled and fly around they will waste precious energy, and might not make it through until autumn when they need to lay their eggs.
