Mental wellbeing in the construction industry: 'There's still that macho-ness'

How does working on a construction site impact mental wellbeing?

As part of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s Mental Wellbeing season, Radio 5 Live has been focusing on the construction industry.

Construction workers are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. In 2021, the last time the ONS released statistics according to sector, 507 construction workers took their own lives.

Logan, 21, started working in construction three years ago. He started struggling with his mental health after 18 months in the job.

He thought his struggle was down to "being so young in such a mature environment".

He says "macho-ness" is still prevalent in the industry, and a key factor in damaging construction workers’ mental health.

"I think it's really difficult to kind of open up in that sort of environment", he said.

If you've been affected by issues similar to this, there's a range of organisations and websites that can offer you advice and support. You can find them on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Action line website at www.bbc.co.uk/actionline
