Pelvic organ prolapse: ‘Why did no one tell me this could happen?’

Author and mum, Helen Ledwick, on “the fear” she felt dealing with a pelvic organ prolapse.

Author of ‘Why Mums Don’t Jump’ and mum, Helen Ledwick, discovered she had a prolapse after the birth of her second child.

Pelvic organ prolapse is when one or more of the organs in the pelvis slip down from their normal position and bulge into the vagina.

Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms include a feeling of heaviness around your lower tummy and genitals, a dragging discomfort inside your vagina or feeling like there's something coming down into your vagina.

Symptoms can usually be improved with pelvic floor exercises and lifestyle changes, but sometimes medical treatment is needed.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty, Helen explains her advice at the time was not to do anything that will ‘make it worse’ in terms of exercise; “don’t run, don’t jump, and don’t lift”.

She explains the knock-on effect of this had her questioning, “should I have made different decisions around the birth, should I have done more Kegels?”
