Public speaking

Post categories:

Emilio Emilio | 20:27 UK time, Wednesday, 24 March 2010

The past week I was a bit busy and worried about a public speaking I had to do. A colleague persuaded me to make the speaking although I haven't experience in these kind of activities, but I'd like to know how to make great presentations so I decided to head for it!

The presentation topic was: "Social networks and Security", specifically with Twitter. The week prior to the presentation I felt very nervous. I did several tests before the presentation day, it was a bit technical because it was supposed the people who will attend it would have knowledge and experience with the topic.

The presentation day arrived, luckily for me there weren't enough people (the first presentations it's best to make it in front of not many people, I think) between ten and fourteeen attendants. The first question I did them was about their experience with the topic and half of the attendants hadn't any prior experience with the topic so I had to improvise most of the presentation. While I was speaking in public I felt my mouth dry and some words were difficult to found them due to the anxiety but at least I could finish the presentation. I showed them practical examples to learn in a easy way the topic and they asked several questions so I supposed they were interested despite some mistakes I did.

I think the best way to learn to speak in public with confidence is putting yourself in front of people even you are sure you will make mistakes. Prior to this activity the only time I was in front of public was when I was a student. Unfortunately the education in Spain don't teach us any skill in how to make public speaking. I think this kind of activity is very important in the current times. And the education should included it in his plan in some way.

How about public speaking in your country?

    Hi Emilio
years ago i worked as a translator in a former soviet Republic. each translation was an opportunity to speek in public, let say maximum 10 people. once i was called for a translation (i was translating italian). no one told me that I was supposed to translate for a conference. there were more than 200 persons in the conference hall. i became very nervous seeing them. then i begun to translate. i was worried about the quality of my translations. while translating i was aware of doing mistakes. but believe me it was a great experience. next time i spoke in public, I do it in the presence of more than 50,000 people.now i'm doing a different work, but always in contact with a lot of people and I'm enjoying i very much. sorry for my english, I speak it rarely. that's why i've subscribed to the bbc to improve it and to meet interesting people to share with new and old experiences.

    Hi Emilio,

What an interesting topic! To be honest, writing about this topic makes me anxious. Public speaking is my major weakness and I don鈥檛 know how you would overcome such a problem. I guess there is no other way but to experience it. The more you experience it the less you will become anxious. I don鈥檛 think there is an easy way out.

Let me tell you about my experience of presenting. A few months ago I was in the same situation as you. I had to do a presentation and I was really nervous. You know why it was really nerve breaking for me because first, I had to do my presentation in English, second I had no previous experience of presenting and finally, I was afraid of forgetting my words in the middle of my presentation. Because I was so nervous, I kept practicing my presentation over and over again. You know how my presentation went! Let me tell you, I felt that I rushed it a little but other wise it was really good, better than I expected. I was so happy with my presentation and most importantly I was able to answer all the questions they asked me at the end which was another worry for me. You know what! I have another presentation coming up in a couple of months and writing about public speaking making me really nervous. I will be very happy if I presented as well as my last presentation or better. There is always room for improvement.

I become jealous of people who are good at public speaking. I wish to become an excellent public speaker. This is my long term goal and I am trying to get involve in things which will help me with public speaking but there are very few opportunities to do it.

Now, let me tell you about your picture. You look very confident in the picture. I wouldn鈥檛 say that you are nervous. You are even smiling which is a very good thing to have during presenting. Wish you best of luck with future presentations. Looking forward to your next blog! Negee

    Hi, Emilio,
I think, it's all right that if you work with adults as in your example. And I'd an experience work with students (id est young people mostly, the girl groups) in my native country, Kazakhstan. It was an art-college, I teached during four terms (semesters) course of lectures of art history, so I was really worried only once: it was the theme about Aristophanes' "Lysistrata" in work Aubrey Vinsent Beardsley and his illustrations for thist Comedy. But to my surprise students develops a love for work A. Beardsley, and now, after my lecture this artist is very favourite in Kazakhstan among students of fineart colleges.
    Regards,
    Emat.

    Hi Emilio,
I think you have chosen a very good topic to talk about public speaking!
You know it's very interesting to know how to be in front of people discussing a given subject where one has to be self-confident, daring and ready to answer every question!! But here let me tell you that you were lucky as your attendants had no experience about what you were presenting :-) this might give you more confidence i think ;-)

Well, for me i did not have had such an experience since university period!!
But as i am thinking of studying translation and interpretation, i guess i need to acquire such skills.
In the picture, you are looking self-confident with a lovely smile and this is required in presentations...I think that you lead a successful one. Good luck
    Kind regards

    Hi Emilio
    How are you doing?
This is Mergui writing from 鈥淭he tropical coast鈥 in Spain, so I am a fellow countryman of you. Anyway, after reading your interesting post, I鈥檝e decided to drop some lines since I feel that I also need not to be afraid of speaking in public, what's more what I really need to do is to put in practice what I was meant to have learnt in a talk, that the headmaster of my Languages School gave us some months ago, by the way, the name of the talk was 鈥淭he Art of Rhetoric鈥 , it was really interesting but the problem comes when you have to do it in front of some people.
Reading your post has given my the boost I needed to try to do it again, since I have already done it once in front of my classmates, however, to be honest with you I鈥檝e watched the video my teacher recorded, and I was so nervous, what鈥檚 more I made so many mistakes that I am not proud at all, I even would dare to say that it was a shame on me. The fact is that I strongly believe that the more you practice the better your speaking skill will be, therefore, as I have said before I鈥檓 going to make a short presentation about 鈥淥rgan donation and transplants鈥 since I had a kidney transplanted twenty years ago and I believe I can do it. Incidentally, I feel I am a lucky guy living in this country, since as you may know we are the number one in the world in this subject due to the superb Spanish transplantation law, which has proved to have worked, consequently some other countries are trying to copy it, what is something great, since people from all over the world may benefit from it.
I hope not to have bored you to death, I wish you all the best and I encourage you to keep on writing in these fantastic blog.
    Have a nice Easter week.
    Mergui.

    Hi Emilio,

I find this topic a really interesting one. Learning presentation skills is not a part of educational program in my country either. Thus, many people struggle while they have to present something in front of many people. I dealt with the same problem once.

Knowing this, recently i have been working with a group of children (age 10 to 14) on gaining presentational skills. This includes all necessary information about preparing a presentation, such as how to collect needed information, how to prepare a power point presentation and how should one communicate the information to the audience.

I must say that I am quite surprised on the skills and self-confidence that people of this age demonstrate when it comes to being in front of the audience. They are finding it fun and challenging.
I should also add that it has helped me a lot too.
Thus, i do agree that a program of this kind, gaining presentational skills, should be a part of school curriculum.

    Best regards to all
    Sunmoon

    Hi, Emilio.

Speaking in public can be frightening. It can also be great. Long ago when I was a teenager we had a discussion. It was during an evening gathering, where we should have some "culture" before some dancing. There were about a hundred people and I was explaining my point of view on a topic when suddenly I felt they were all listening, completely captivated by what I said. It was an incredible feeling, scaring and overwhelming at the same time. Since then I've had the same feeling only a couple of times. I hope you'll feel it one day.

    Hi Emilio
Nice to read your blog again this week. The topic is interesting.
It's also quite hard for me to give speech or speak in public. I think to be a good speaker need to get some practice and good preparation about the topic. It's not strength for having nervous before you give the speech but we need to know how to get rid of it before and during you giving the speech. That i think we can reduce mistake.
Looking forward to you next blog.

Hello Emilio! I always have butterflies in my stomach when I have to delivery a speech. I麓ve just remembered I have to prepare a speech about a book I麓m studying in my English classes at uni: Franknstein by Mary Shelley. Actually, it麓s a kind of intertextual project in which I have to choose a work of art ( painting or sculpture) which represents best Mary Shelley麓s book and then I should explain the reasons of my choice in a loud and clear English :-O!!! Hope I can make it.
    Best wishes, Ana Paula.

The public speaking in my country is very popular. I have some experience with this in my job. I realize that some employees, even without tecnical knowledges, have some strategic position inside the company. The hability to speak public is becoming too important in business. But, I am too seemed with Em铆lio. When I have to speak in pulic, I desire to pee, my mouth dry, and go on.

I need to improve these skills in my life, cause the future for people that work with this will be in advance in the business area.

    So long

    Hi Emilio,

I read your text that you wrote about presentation that you had. I remember that I had presentation for first time in my lifetime. that time I was 18 years old, and I had presentation for all of parents and teachers in my high school . just I can say you I had stress just a few first seconds because I thought they have enough knowledge about topic that I want to tell them. when I finished my speech, they clapped for me and encouraged me for my presentation. I belive that important tips for speech are confidence and relax.also I wanna to say that your subject that you told about it was very interesting.

    I really enjoyed Emilio,

    good luck

    Hi Emilio,

5-Emphasise the things you have in common with them
    6-Relate new information to old
    7-Be logical, honest and sincere
8-Try to engage emotions e.g. story or picture
    9-End strongly

    Hello Emilio,

Well done mate, a clever choice for a topic to discuss over here.
    I've learned few tricks and would certainly like to share them with you;

    - Try to get used to the place where you're going to give the presentation at.

    - try to mingle with the attendees and have some chat with them before presentation, get to know and memorise some of their names (I know that we don't remember the names of whoever has been introduced to us if first time) but you can try.

    - Provoke attendees with couple of funny jokes (as a starter) relevant to presentation's subject (I would tell you; You've got to have some British sense of humoure to suceed in this /- this could be provoketive to you because you certainly have got your lovely Spanish sense of humoure so that was a trigger for an idea)- You can yawn deliberately and make them all yawn too; tell them thanks for following me up- this will alert them and they'd laugh.

    - Be concise and short to the point as much as you can while you're sharing your thoughts, I know that technical stuff could be boring sometimes.

    - You can set up an "experement it yourself" corner at the presentation room for those who might wish to try something related to the technical topic, oversaw by you and during the breaks if possible.

I wish I can share more but I will contradict myself by not being concise and to the point lol.

Should you need more tips or ideas please let me know (in case you've read my comment of course)

    Best of wishes mate

    Hi Emilio
Im Martha from Peru. I like your blog beacuse i think there are important topics to talk about.
When I was a uiversity student I was always afraid to apeak in public but I decided to take a workshop about tips that can help you to speak in public so little but little I was getting confidence of doing it. I think the principal tips to give a good presentation is the way that you prepare yoursewlf to do it. First choose a topic that you know , get enogh infomation about it, give examples of it so it is easear for your auddience to understand and make the auddience to participate so they get involved and before doing your presentation practices it as many times you want in fron of a mirror .
I believe these tips will help you a lot

Hi Emilio! I'm Shei. We have the same problem. I don't really like talking in front of many people especially in a language that is not my own, English! I think I am quite fine with written English but the moment I have to speak, I always fail. Anyway, just continue practicing. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes because it's part of the learning process. Good luck!
