A message from the past

I think that what people think changes a lot as time goes by, and also memories change, so I can remember the same event in different ways in different period of my life.

That's why many people use to write letters to their future themselves, letters written to be read after 10, 20, perhaps 50 years. Just to start a discussion between two different yourself: the present and the future one.

I've always loved this kind of things, and maybe one day I will start to write to my future self, but what I already started to do, and I'm very glad of it, is writing letters to my daughter, letters to be read when she is eighteen.

When my wife got pregnant, before knowing the sex of our child, I opened two different email accounts, one for the name of the male, the other for the female. When we figured out that we were waiting for a little girl, I dropped one address, and went on with the other. I gave the address of Anna to my wife and to our parents too, so she will have a way to better know her grandparents.

The first times I wasn't even a father yet, she wasn't borned yet, and for a lot of time, even after that, I wasn't able to sign the letters calling me father, or daddy, I only starter after several months, I started writing her calling me Omar, like a friend.

I share the password of this account with my wife, I just know half of the password, she knows the other half, so that no one is able to read messages that are just for our daughter Anna. This is a very important point. It makes you think very well of what are you writing, because it's like a spoken word, there is no come back, and it's very difficult because there are a lot of variables you don't know.

She's one year old now, and I think I will be very different in 2029. I know sometimes people becoming older begin to forget how it feels to be young, starting to have different views, maybe more conservatives one, or just more judicious.

I just have little idea of how I will be in seventeen years, I haven't the faintest idea of how my daughter will be by then, and above of all, I can't even guess how our relations will be. I remember my teen age years, and I know it wasn't easy to deal with me then.
Today I'm already very different from how I was when I was eighteen, so maybe by 2029 me and Anna will have run into some difficulties in communication.

If it will be the case, I hope that reading what I'm thinking now about her, about my life, could be useful to understand better each other, finding out that we are more similar than she expected, for example. If it's not the case, and we'll perfectly understand each other, I just needn't have to worry about it, and if so, I think it will be in any case just a good present for a girl on the beginning of her adult life.

Did you ever find a letter or a diary or letters written by your parents in the past? How did you feel reading it?

    Good aternoon!
I found a diary of my mother. But it was not really diary. It was a special notebook where mother wrote words of wisdom of famous people. I was interested to read because I as if went in those days. These aphorisms reflected her emotional feelings and aspiration for future. Mother said that these aphorisms helped her to fullfil her dreams. It's very important for youth. Why am I writing about mother's notebook in past? You will not believe! The diary was stolen along with other valuables. Apparently thieves were amateurs of words of wisdom...:)

    Hi Omar,

I have never experienced reading a diary of my elders but I think it is a fantastic idea to write one for your children. I am going to do that because sometimes it is difficult to express your feelings for your children and writing a diary provides that opportunity to write whatever you want for your children. I think, I am definitely going to do this. It would be amazing when my children find a diary written for them when I am not there or something. I think that would be a valuable present for them. That's a new job added to my list.

Thanks Omar for sharing your valuable experiences with us.

    Hi there,

That is a wonderful idea. It would be interesting to read letters after so many years, it will help us get an idea about what our priorities were, how life was and how much technology has advanced.

That reminds me of a book I read recently by Cecelia Ahern, 'P.S.- I love You'. It is about a man battling brain tumour and ultimately dies. During his illness he writes twelve letters, one for each month for his wife to read. It is a very touching tale, as to how his letters bring her back to normalcy from her depressed state. Even a Hollywood movie is made based on the book!

Once again thanks for such a great idea.

    Until next time,

    Hi Omar,

Let me congratulate you! As an only child I find your idea so lovely. I have always wondered how my mom and dad had thought about me when I was a baby or when I was a little girl.. It is a cute present for your daughter I am sure she will thank you forever. There are a lot of things we need to learn and sometimes we refeuse to hear other's advices even if they are from our own parents.

    Best wishes

    Hello Omar,

What a great idea you've got here! It's a wise and futurist view of life. Your daughter will actually appreciate it, I'm sure.

I would love that my parents had thouhgt like this. I too regret that I didn't think the same for my children. Unfortunately, it's too late. But it's no use crying over spilt milk now.

What I decided to do to compensate this failure will be to send letters to my grand-children and also to write about my experience in life. I hope this would be useful either to my children or other people in my surrounding.

Congratulations for your positive way of thinking.

    All the best,

    Elmansour

    Hi Sumayya,
and thank you for the suggestion! I will add it to my "Read listen watch" list, where I put all the suggestion about books, movies and music coming from my friends, or picked up on the internet.
If you enjoyed that book, Iwould like to suggest you another book with an amazing similar plot, but I don't remember the title and the author, I tried to find it over the internet, but without any result. The book is about a wife dying with cancer that cooks for his husband, feìreezing them so that he could eat them after she died. The book begins with the husband that pick up from the deep-freezer the last meal cooked by his dead wife, months before.

you're right, sometimes we don't want to get advices even if they come from aour parents, I hope my daughter will be more willing to get advice from a younger version of his father! :-)

    Hi Omar,

Your idea is amazing! Diaries and letters are good way to express our deepest emotions and make us remember the exact feeling we felt at the time we wrote them. And like you said, make us see how much we've changed since then. It even reminds me of a quote by Franz Kafka:
"One advantage in keeping a diary is that you become aware with reassuring clarity of the changes which you constantly experience."

I'm sure that your daughter will love to read the messages you wrote and surely will help her to understand better your reasons and motives and why you took certain decisions.
And by the way, your English skills are very good!

I wish you and your family all the best.
