Hi, Nuala!

Thanks for the diverting article, you've mentioned in you last blog. I prefer to bike around Sofia as well. It's an advantage of small cities as opposed to big cities with heavy traffic like Moscow.

You were right about the meaning of the phrases I'd used in my previous article. Thank you for the correction! And I must confess this homework was quite difficult for me! You chose the examples, in which I hadn't been sure! Anyway, this is it!

Articles and Collocations

1. It gave me something to think about! A momentary art!
A: OK

2. He draws with the brushes.
A: He draws with brushes.

3. Using the toothpick, the master draws on the whipped cream.
A: Using a toothpick, the master draws on whipped cream.

4. But we have invented more attractive way of doing it!
A:OK

5. One step and you'll fall into a waterfall!
A: One step and you'll fall into the waterfall!

6. I was far away from home all along!
A:OK

7. There was nobody on the illuminated streets.
A:OK

8. It reminds me of scientists during excavations.
A: It reminds me of archaeologists during excavations.

9. In ancient times people drew on rocks in the ground and we, their issue, continue this tradition.
A: In ancient times people drew on rocks in the ground and we, their descendants, continue this tradition.

10. He is bathed in magnificent sunrises and sunsets!
A:OK

Nuala, I'm looking forward to see your comments!

Best wishes,

Jan

    Hi Jan,

Well done on your third homework task. You did very well on it but there are still a few sentence that need a bit more work.

    1. It gave me something to think about! A momentary art!
    A: OK

    1. Actually this is an example of when we don't use 'the', 'a' or 'an' when we're talking about something in general (music, life, love. etc.).

    So it should have been:

It gave me something to think about! Momentary art!

    2. He draws with the brushes.
    A: He draws with brushes.

    2. Perfect.

    3. Using the toothpick, the master draws on the whipped cream.
A: Using a toothpick, the master draws on whipped cream.

    3. Good 'A toothpick' is right because you're introducing the topic of toothpicks for the first time and 'whipped cream' because you're talking about 'whipped cream' in general. If you went on to talk in more detail about what the artist does, you could say: 'Next, she uses the toothpick to draw a love heart on the whipped cream'. Both times in that sentence you'd use 'the' because by then your readers would know which toothpick and which whipped cream you were talking about.

    4. But we have invented more attractive way of doing it!
    A:OK

    4. Here you need an article to go with 'way' which is a noun. So it should have been:

But we have invented a more attractive way of doing it!

    5. One step and you'll fall into a waterfall!
A: One step and you'll fall into the waterfall!

    5. Actually this one was OK as it was. And it's OK as it is. You can justify either answer by saying 'a' is OK because it's the first time 'waterfall' has been introduced or you can say 'the' is OK because when you look at the photo, it's clear which waterfall you're talking about!

    6. I was far away from home all along!
    A:OK

    6. Maybe it's my mistake here, but I thought you meant to say 'all alone'. 'All alone' means with no family or friends with you. 'All along' means 'all that time'.

    7. There was nobody on the illuminated streets.
    A:OK

    7. Perfect

    8. It reminds me of scientists during excavations.
A: It reminds me of archaeologists during excavations.

    8. Very good. 'Archaeologists' is a better word to use with 'excavations' here than 'scientists'.

    9. In ancient times people drew on rocks in the ground and we, their issue, continue this tradition.
A: In ancient times people drew on rocks in the ground and we, their descendants, continue this tradition.

    9. Again, you've change the word correctly. Well done! 'Descendants' is exactly the right word to use here.

    10. He is bathed in magnificent sunrises and sunsets!
    A:OK

    10. Perfect. There was nothing wrong with this sentence at all.

    All the best,

    Nuala
