HOMEWORK â„–5

Hi Nuala!

First of all thank you for the vocabulary! It's really important to know how English speakers say something rather than to translate phrases form Russian into English.

Honestly, I haven't read these books, you mentioned. But I've seen this film «The Road». It's quite frightening and cruel to my mind, but if we'd abstract away from the fact of eating people, the history of the main characters, the father and the boy, is very touching! And it was interesting to watch, how it could be, if there is no civilization on the Earth.

Turn now to my homework!

Past simple and present perfect

1. All through my life books have been my best friends.

2. While I was at school I read a lot.

3. When I was young, every time I started a new piece of writing, I was absorbed.

4. I've read all Remarque's books.

5. When I was a teenager, I read the 'Three Comrades'.

6. Honestly, I have been thinking about my own business.

7. I've learned from it how to present myself.

8. As you can see, I've always been interested in books.

9. After reading his novels, I started to write my own short stories.

10. Dale Carnegie's book was exactly the right book at the right time.

That's all! Thanks!

Best wishes,

Jan

    Hi Jan,

Excellent work on your fifth homework task. You did really well on the past simple and present perfect. The only one we might want to look at again is number 7 because it's a bit tricky:

    7. (I learned / I've learned) from it how to present myself.

Which form you use depends on how you see your learning from this book – is it finished or not?

If you think you've learned all you can from the book then you should use the past simple:

    7. I learned from it how to present myself.

If, on the other hand, you go back to this book again and again and continue to learn new ways of presenting yourself from it, then the present perfect would be better:

    7. I've learned from it how to present myself.

So actually either answer is fine, it just depends on your point of view.

    Well done again.

    All the best,

    Nuala

    Hi Jan,
I'm a new comer here.I have been reading your posts from several days before. Now I have finished them. They are all good acticles.I come from a non-English country.English is very different from my native language.I have been studying it from long time ago when I was a student. But I found it very defficult.
I think the most defficult is the vocabulary. There are so many words to remember. Can you give me some suggestions for it.I admire you have grasped four languages. So you must have a good experience for studying a language. And there is no English speaker around me.So it's very defficult to improve my speaking and listening.Hope your advices for studying a language and waiting for your next post.

    Thank you
    Niu

    Hi Jan,
let me say little bit about my self here.. i am an English teacher who teaches English as Foreign language in Palestine which is my country.. my native lanugage is Arabic which is quiet different from English but my determination to master English lanugage is strong.
your way of writing ur articles and ur blogs seems to be intresting and here is summer and i have little courses for teaching English to kids in my institution so i have a time to surf the internet and try to meet new friends around the world and i hope that we will be a good sample for a good freindly relation which will last for the last breath in our souls..
i may say too much but its rarely to find some one who speaks english around here so i choose to annoy you with my words from time to time if u really dont mind . wish u a happy day

    Hi everybody!

    To Niu: Hello and Welcome!

I’ve already written about my strategy. I repeat it again with pleasure! My method of learning any language includes speaking with native people, chatting online, listening news and other broadcast on TV or Radio and translating songs! Of course, after you know much about grammar! So, I’d offer you to use this advice and you’ll see the result!

And about vocabulary, I learn Spanish now and I have the same problem with rather different words then in English, Russian and Bulgarian. What’s way I just learn it, 20 words per day, for example.

To Mohammed: Hi and Welcome! As far as I see, you’re quite romantic personality. It’s great! Let’s be in touch and I’m waiting for you further comments.

To Phudsadee Sweeney: You don’t bother me at all! I’m happy with one another member of learning English group. See you around!

    Best wishes,

    Jan
