Neil's World Cup Blog
It only happens every four years and each time it comes round I think - and hope - that I might have grown up a little and care less about the World Cup. But I can't. I'm simply addicted.
As soon as the first game kicks off, this 36 year-old man will be transported back 24 years to Mexico 1986 - a 12 year old boy refusing to believe Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' had knocked England out of the tournament. I've been hoping ever since that the pain of that cruel defeat will end with a glorious England victory. There is always hope...
In many ways the World Cup is about memories. It's easy to remember where you were or who you were with during a great game. Unfortunately, as an England fan, my memories are mainly bad! I'd like to hear about your favourite World Cup memories. If you are from Italy you won't have much trouble. But I'm also interested in memories of games when some of the smaller footballing nations have beaten one of the favourite teams, like when South Korea won against Italy in 2002.
For me, watching the underdog do well is one of the best things about the World Cup. Looking at the fixtures I can see that North Korea are playing against five-times champions Brazil, while the holders Italy have a match against New Zealand.
It's also great to see the host nation doing well at the World Cup. It makes the atmosphere at the tournament even more special. So if you're South African I'd like to hear about the excitement in your country. Send us your pictures and video clips.
Last, but not least, I want to hear your World Cup predictions. My heart says England will win, but my head is telling me that it's much more likely to be Spain or Brazil. What do you think?

Being a soccer lover, I am interested in football, especially the World Cup tournament, I have fallen in love with it since Mexico 86 when I am a 10 years old boy. Here, Argentina's football team got trophy and Diego Maradona became a football legend. Fortunately at this World Cup, it is interesting to meet Diego as a coach and I hope his team will be successful.

I'm so thrilled to hear from you. And it's nice to see you back. I still remember when you're presenting the 'how to' program on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ LE, which I found it quite useful.Interestingly, I have never seen a picture of you.
I'm so excited about the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. I think what makes me even more excited is that as you all know this is the first time that Africa has hosted the World Cup in its history.
To be honest with you, my favorite team is Spain, and I hope it will do its best to keep the ball better. However, it's difficult to predict who's going to win, because it's just a game.
But at least I hope Fernardo Torres will show us a brilliant piece of football.
Wish you the best of luck,
Abdisamad

I'm Brazilian. Needless to say, I hope Brazil strike any other team. But it's not easy, since world cup unites the best football players in the world in only one competition.
I also like watching the underdog doing well. I am keeping my fingers crossed especially for South Africa. I think they deserve win for the happiness they have expresses all over the world cup organization.
By the way, did you watch South Africa v. Mexico? What do you think about the match? Particularly, I'm sure S.A. deserved win, for they were better during the whole second half. Other than that, there happened a penalty which the referee didn't see - it is clear that the Mexican player used his arm to paralyse his opponent.

In 2002 worldcup, we(S. Korea) defeated Fortgal, Italy, Spain and went to semifinal. Unbelievable. But, in 2006 worldcup, our team could not succeed to go 2nd round. S. Korea and N. Korea participate 2010 worldcup separately. We hope that both Korea team pass the 2nd round and will meet quarter or semi final, hopefully.

It's so nice to 'see' you again. I wondered where you had been. I liked the programmmes you once hosted very much. I often take them out and listen to them to review my study even now. I still remember you once said you tried to find the root of your family name 'Edgeller' until you searched it by google. Some friends said your experiences sounded like an advertisement forGoogle. :)
Since I come from China, whose national team didn't get chance to attend the World Cup, I can enjoy watching the games sensibly. I usually choose some teams to support. Since the time difference, we have some problem at watching the games. Many people are mad, they don't sleep in this world-cup month because some games hold in the early morning (2:30 am) in Beijing time.

It's the second time I post a comment on this wonderful blog.
Today has been another great day for those who love football. Until now, I have watched Argentina v Nigeria. God! What a sizzling match! Argentina showed that can go far in this world cup.
But without seeing Brazil kicking off, I still think they will be best.
I also think the World Cup final will have two out of these four teams: Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Italy. That's what I think, but I'm still following Brazil and South Africa.
With regards,

I like your statement that the World Cup is very often about memories. But if you say that as an England fan, your memories are mainly bad, then let me tell you, as an Austria fan, there are almost no memories at all... EXCEPT - yes, except that one miraculous date that we Austrians still like to tell our children and grand-children about, when Austria beat Germany! It happened in Cordoba, Argentina back in 1978. Austria was already in a hopeless position, but Germany, who actually were the holders of the title if I'm not mistaken, could have passed on to the next round,if they had managed to beat Austria by a wide margin. However, what happened was that our team won 3:2 against them, and both teams had to fly home - allegedly even on the same plane... This match has become truly legendary for us Austrians. Mind you, we cling to that story because in the years and decades that followed the miracle of Cordoba there was not an awful lot to be proud of football-wise. I feel I must mention the historic defeat against Spain in this context. 0:9 - not funny. But that was not in a World Cup tournament, so let's not talk about it.
Well, so much for the memories of a classical underdog. As far as the present World Cup is concerned, I would like to see an African team win. It would still be possible at this point! Go, Ghana!
See you round,
Elisabeth (Austria)
