In my country, Turkey, the situation is different. Nowadays I don't know exactly every day how many classes and how many diffrent subjucts there are at the primary school , but in my primary school days it was 5 classes at every weekdays. And, I can't remember what time I used to go school in the mornings, but I clearly remember last class used to finish at 3pm :) There was 3 classes before the afternoon, and two classes later. Break times were not same in between each classes and when the longest break time came, we, boys of the class, used to run towards the schoolyard for to play soccer. And,as far as I can remember, girls used to sing popular song of the that time at the class.


Generally a primary scool chid sleep about at 9 o'clock in the Turkey. Comparing the my contry, the stiution which you mantioned seems to tough on yours country's kids. Turkey is trying to change its education system from depending on homework to depending on learning at the class and more activity at he class( I wonder if you can understand this last sentence:) )

I'm from Poland. I think that's must be very hard period of the time for this young people. In my opinion school should encourage his pupils to learn, to develop his sport or musician abilities havever should have to do that bit by bit.

In my country in primary school are only esay subjects as maths, polish, history, p.e., and so on.
As for more sophisticated subjects like: chemistry or phisics has been learned in youth school and secondary school

I must admit that the pictures are so effctive.I can feel their will and ambition to learn and to enrich their knowledge.They look so clever and so intelligent.Enayat after all your painful posts about your country maybe these children represent new hope for Afghanistan.Let them be educated as much as you can .This is the best investment for your future.In my country there is always cutting off in the education budget and I beleive it's a crucial mistake.

I'd like to share with you and others my experience about Moscow. 15 years ago I've already heard the same opinion about high teaching load in our schools. And honestly I was wondering a lot why people say like that.

In Russia every day school lessons start at 8:30 and last till 13:00 in primary school and there are 5 lessons per day (children age is between 7 -10), and till 15:00 in secondary and high school and there are 7 lessons per day (children age is between 10 -17). It is like that now, and it was the same situation when I was a little girl.

But! In my schooldays almost every child had additional occupation after school. For example, I had been attending music school. Every workday I had about 3 hours different classes there. So as you see, I had to do not only my usual homework every day, but the other homework as well.

It must be admitted, that at the same time I had many friends and I remember clearly that I was able to go out with them very often. And also I could say that I was keen on reading, and I spent my free time with books as well. So I can definitely say, I had a great childhood and I was prepared to adult life!

Well, as I said, in Moscow it's a normal way of children's life. And when we grown - up, we already know how to manage many things at the shirt time. I'm talking about working a lot, learning something new, having time with our family and friends, parting time to our hobbies and ourselves and etc.

And the last thing which I'd like to say that we really don't know the abilities of our brain and body, and I'd advise not to spare ourselves and do as more as we can during our lives to make things better!

i'm from belgium and i learn english too.
In my country we have 3 communities (flemish, french, en the german one)and programmes of the schools are thought at the level of community( federal, communities, region, province and communes)and i think , but my wife end i haven't got any child unfortuneletly,children in primary school have one teacher who learns them all the knowledge they need (so it is not divided in different classes)( they go at 8.30 am and return about 3.30 pm).. when europe evaluates the knowlegde of the children in all europe, we have had bad results.. especially those of the french community..
and here children must not have homework lasting more 30 minutes..
it is not a burden (like in your country) but we have not the best results (the authorities says that their children are able to think very well unless they don't know the date of independance of belgium)
so may be it's a little to much work for the afghanistan children but a good education is usefull in life...

Here in Brazil the children have 5 subjects per day: the classes generally start at 7:30 a.m and finish around the 12:00. They learn the basic subjects, like portuguese, math, history... The teenagers, like me, have 6 subjects per day and our classes start at 7:10 a.m and finish at 12:30. But in the afternoon, we, unless im my school, have a lot of things to study, in the most of the times I just finish my activities at night, but I don't think that is bad. But, talking about children, perhaps this situation that you said in your country is too much for them. Children must have time to study, but to have fun too.

I'm from Vietnam, but now working in Singapore. My son is studying at Primary one here and I realize that the program for P1 in both nations is almost the same, most of students must work hard to finish their duties at school as well as homework at home. It is difficult to compare our study in 70s, 80s with the modern age of new technology. The development of internet has brought a lot of information to our lives that we need to deal with it. It means the education system must be adapted this change. I can argue that it is usual as there are a lot of knowledge and skills taught at school at this time because it is crucial for our children to follow and catch up new knowledge.

I am not very familiar with primary education nowadays but the children don?t have so many subjects to study in the first years.
Perhaps you do not know that a few years ago the uruguayan government begun a program "Ceibal", to give each child a computer. Now every child who attends public school has a special laptop. They use them at school and also at home with the family.
The private education adds more subjects than public, according to the different isntitutions. We have 6 years of primary school and 6 of secondary school.

Hi Enayat! It seems the 1st,2nd and 3rd grade students have to spend most of the time in their study and doing homework. I agree that childern in primary schools should have time to learn knowledge from their surroundings apart from learning knowledge from textbooks.
In the city I live in China, primary school students(aged 6-12) study about 8 subjects. They take classes from about 8 to 11:30 in the morning and from 2:30 to 5 in the afternoon. After school, some students may go home to finish their homework, some may go to private education centres to have intense study in maths, Chinese and English, and some may have activites to develope their interests.
Most parents want their own childern to grow as they wish(e.g. get high score in school). So they easily neglect what their childern truely need.
They would encourge their childern to spend time in study instead of having fun, which brings pressure to childern.

I don't know whether the Afghan parents hold the same value as the parents described above. In my point of view, parents should pay equal attention to children's character and manners(e.g. respect,politeness) as to their exam results.

I couldn¡¯t agree with you more, Enayat, that nowadays primary pupils are overloaded with lessons and homework and that their rucksacks are overloaded with books and other school stuff. I left school three years ago and when I went to primary school I had only five or even four classes per day and the number of the subjects I studied then was six because only basic subjects were on the curriculum. In my opinion, that was quite enough. Besides, the advantage of studying few subjects in the very beginning of your education is that you can concentrate on the necessary information and learn the basics very well. And that means that when you move to secondary school you have good knowledge to continue your education on a new, more difficult level. Unfortunately someone decided that children had to study more subjects (though I must say that even now the number of primary subjects on the curriculum in Russian schools is not that scary as in your country) and as a result, poor seven-year-olds carry enormous and heavy rucksacks, have little or no time to go out and suffer from constant backaches and headaches. What is more, tests show that the level of their knowledge keeps getting lower and that is really sad.

In Brazil children with 7,8,9 and 10 (it consits the primary course, now changed to 2nd./3rd./4th. and 5th grades) years old study Math, Portuguese, Science, History and Geography. Depending on the school they have other subjects to help them develop abilities that"ll guide them to be a good citzen and meet different modalities that normally they don't have at home, like: foreign languages, Philosophy, Physical Education, Reading Room, Music, Ballet and other dances, Capoeira, chess and sports like "footsal", a kind of footbal that's played indoors. Some schools have all day long class period, but they are few.

it's also a big problem in china, and I think the hard time of these children come from the wrong opinions of their parents. In the view of parents, a child could have a better future if he or she learn more, at least, he or she could have a better choice than his or her competitors.
They think it's worth of giving up good time today and get good time tomorrow, chinese parents really think like this!! I prey children the free time during which they can understand and enjoy meaning of life.

I recommend that you should register for a school( it daesn't matter its level, you can start from where you left it, if you can't that level you can try more low level. I hope it will develop yours comprehensibilty.)

Hi Enayat,

We have a similar education system in India wherein students are made to carry hefty school bag and made to sit at school for hours loading them with unecessary syllabus which isn't required at their age level. I am happy that the current education system has changed a bit in quite a few states, where students are indulged more in physical activities, logical thinking, critical reasoning etc.., rather than just giving an intensive classroom training.

I hope similar changes would happen your country as well.

I come from Vietnam. In my country, the student include children and aldult have to get up at 5am, because we have to go to school at 6.30am and we will begin study at 7am. Everyday, we have to carry heavy bag which we use put note books, books, bottle water, tools (pens, pencils, ruler,...). The bags are heavy about 4kg or 5kg. The childrens who studys grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 too.In Vietnam, we have many note book for per subject. The childrens who studys grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 have more 8 note books for all subject. Expect, they have more 6 books (marth, nature and society, reading, music, writing, story,...) per semesters (we have 2 semesters and we study 10 months every year).
The parent's children always want their child be exellent so they aplly to a parttime class for their child.
The Children in Vietnam study from 7am to 4pm (they have a relax time at 11am and they go on study from 1.30pm) after go home, they have to prepare for a partime class ( a partime class begin 5pm and 7pm so if their parent aplly a both class, the children will go home at 9pm). When go home they have to prepare homework for a next day. Some children have to all weak, they don't have a free time to activities to relaxtation. I had a opportunity meet one child like that, he look older your old and he always feel tired. I want help him by explaining to they parent that they are wrong. But i can do that. Because they have one child and they always want your child excelent and i know that they never listen my explaination.

In my country algerai;the children suffer from many problems;they stay in school over then7hours;And they hold a heavy bag.they start study at 8:00untill 11:30;they go to their home,for having their lunch, then they come back to school at 2:00untill 5:00.

Here in our country China, The students study from 8am to 5pm. they have the heavy burden on their back.After coming back home, the students have a lot of homework to do. They need to study hard for 12 years.(Primary shool:6 years,high shool:3 years,senior high school 3 years).At the grade 3 of high school,the students have the much pressure,because they need to study hard for entering into the key senior high school. And at the grade 3 of senior high school, the students have very much pressure,maybe it is the most during the life. because they will need to
take the part in the examination which named"GAO KAO¸ß¿¼".it is the examination of entering into the university. almost everyone regard it as very important, The examination last for 3 days. during the 3 days.
the parents will send their child to the examination room and waiting for them until the examation is ending up.the examination of entering into the university is just like the footlog.if you get the good score.you will get the admission notice from the excellent university.

Dear Enayat, here in Italy children and their parents are no longer interested in education. I'm the daughter of not educated parents who got married after the war. They were very intrested in my education and encouraged me to study because they wanted me to have a better position in society and a good work.
Today parents care about music, physical education and sports in general.
Our students hate doing homework because they don't have time for it: they spend all the evening at the football ground or at the gym to learn dancing.
