Which group?

Post categories:

Dominique Dominique | 00:31 UK time, Saturday, 18 September 2010

Hello! As I can see, you all have almost asked the same questions.

This picture below, as you can see, is a mask, which is worn particularly in certain ceremonies. These ceremonies could be held in case of death, or some events related to the kingdom. What happens actually there is that the people who are wearing these masks are dancing, doing some expressive gestures that inquire quite something of 鈥渆xperience鈥 to be able to understand...

I mean by 鈥渆xperience鈥 the fact that a person can be used to 鈥渄eal鈥 with traditional chiefs, and traditional customs, where he learns some anecdotes and some 鈥渨ays to live or to do thing鈥, so that he become used and skilled about all traditional facts there...
As a matter of fact, those people who are dancing during the ceremony are in some culture not supposed to be seen by the assembly (鈥,鈥) why? Well I鈥檓 not sure i could be able to answer accurately. I used to ask, they told me it is tradition, and it could be some of the masquerades that form part of religious ceremonies enacted to contact with spirits and ancestors.

About the witchery...it鈥檚 difficult to make a point and demonstrate how real it is, but with what i heard, i don鈥檛 know... first i make a point that here there are many of what we call traditional practiser who use the 鈥 nature鈥 to solve people鈥檚 problems. You can thoroughly understand that from the nature we get plants, animals, energy (water-fire-wind...), human beings, and more...
If you ask me whether they efficiently do it, I鈥檒l be at a loss, because if i remember everything that happened in my life, I鈥檝e never tried it. (0.0)
Furthermore, when i say 鈥渟olve people鈥檚 problems鈥 you may straighly guess that solving somebody鈥檚 problem may include causing a problem to someone else. So, for example according to them, killing an albino child may appear as an important step to get over a challenging situation that made a person 鈥渃onsulting鈥 that traditional practiser who is actually a 鈥渟orcerer鈥. Yes i know that鈥檚 horrible. But it鈥檚 a fact.
And about me, well that鈥檚 a bit funny. I鈥檓 not that 鈥 educated鈥 , i鈥檓 just an innocent happy baobab who is learning pharmacy in Senegal, after passing in Cameroon the exam that is a prerequisite for university entrance. But to be honest, i wish i took a cooking course. I want to be a chief!
As all holidays, i鈥檓 here in Cameroon, and i must confess that sometimes i feel like a fish out water here; it鈥檚 incredible how much people can be different. But as you asked me which group i belong to, i鈥檒l say none of them. Yes none of them. Because i鈥檓 hardly considering people on their culture or on where they are from. I think I鈥檓 more focus on what they have in their heart. Are they any good?
So yes that鈥檚 my interest in any person. Tell me bloggers, am i not wonderful?!

What about you? Which group are you belong to? I do hope you will not forget to answer it! ( don鈥檛 bother Natanael, i鈥檓 not talking to you, i鈥檓 pointing Nastya, Elisa, Beatriz, Svetlana, Marina, Rihana, Ashish, Pary, Elisabeth...i cannot list everyone...i鈥 m afraid i can鈥檛 (^_^) Any person who will read this entry is 鈥渄early expected鈥 to answer it, although they should first have a look on the previous entry. I know i鈥檓 too demanding, but don鈥檛 worry September is almost finished (*_^) !!!

    Hello Dominique,

thanks a lot for let us to know a bit more about the costumes of your country, as you may have noticed I am also learning English, whatever new word is coming into my vocabulary i just try to apply into some sentences which may fit. I find interesting these words:
    - assembly
    - masquerades
    - enacted
It makes a lot of fun learning English with so much interesting topic as you bring here, by the way, what about African music? I heard them sometimes even in some African language...it is so much inviting to dance
Which group? It is difficult to put ourselves in a group, I guess I belong to the group where I better feel comfortable with knowing my position.

    looking forward to more entries

    Hello Dominiqe
At last I feel the spirit of Africa!I admire African Art and I have my private colection of African sculpture. The mssks are so expressive!I consider the person who made them as a real artist althougu he didn't graduat any art academy. He used simple local materials with handy selfmade tools and created a meaningful work.I my self I'm an artist.I hope you and the other friends here aware to the fact that we have our Modern Art in the westen world thanks to African Art.The turning point was in 1906 In Paris during an international exahibition when Picaso discoverd an African mask. All the rest is history...
By the way Dominique now you may know what I think about the drawing that you got in Gor茅e's Land,I'm sorry ...
The Africans are so creative in art, in dance, in fashion, in hair style in coulers combinations etc. Come on Dominique send us more about Africa spirit!September is about to end....
@Pary congratulations for your son birthday. What kind of handy crafts do you like? made of copper?Lucky me that can communicate with you here
    All the best

Hey folks! What are talking about? September is about to end, hm? No way! It's just 18 September, we've got twelve days in the company of "an innocent happy baobab" (^_*) left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude, it was just a cry from the heart because I'm not ready to say goodbye to dear Dominique, at least not now. By the way, it wasn't me who had written the beginning, it was a violent river ;-) And now that I'm a peaceful mountain again I'm going to answer to our Supervisor's entry though I'm dog-tired after three hours of English and another three hours of Spanish. But I just can't help doing it - I've become addicted to your blog, Dommi :)

I think you're absolutely right, Dominique, not to judge people by the culture or nation they belong to or by their complexion. We all have some stereotypes of people from other states but they're dangerous, they often lead to misunderstandings and sometimes even to violence and hatred. I suggest we all try to avoid them. Do you agree? :)

It's an interesting question about what group we belong to, and an interesting one, I should say, because in fact each of us belongs to many groups. I'll begin with something really easy: I belong to a group of those who are learning English just because they enjoy it ;-) Well, warm-up exercises are over, let's proceed to something more difficult: I belong to a group of people who can be silent for hours and don't suffer being alone (and often lonely as well), I belong to a group of those who are always doing everything at the very last moment (unfortunately), I belong to a group of those who don't like going to bed and getting up early, to those who hate lying and being lied to, to those who can almost always find something good in others, ... Is that enough, Dommi?

And at the end of my post I'd like to thank Svetlana for sharing her experience with us. You've been studying English only for two years? I can't believe it because your level is really great. And I think you know very well that only those who do nothing don't make mistakes (^-*), so there is nothing to be ashamed of. Just keep going :) And dear Pary, thanks a lot for your encouraging words :)

    Best wishes,
    Nastya, Russia, Lubertsy

Hi dear danny , so you are an artist ! Good Job . Being an artist is one of my dreams . It 's one of my mistakes . I always regret about that . I wish I had my studies or at least my Job in art . I specially love painting ( water color the most ) and photography but I haven't still had opportunity to learn them ( I just had some calligraphy courses in my Uni time and I 'm going to continue it . By the way what kind of artist are you ? sorry I mean in which area do you work ?
About my handy crafts passion : I like almost all of them . I remember a big handy crafts festival in my university city , Tabriz 鈥 It was a big dream . The festival was really huge ! It take me days to visit it completely .I specially like different kinds of Rug ( there are different type of them Gleim , Gabbeh ,鈥. have you hear about them ?.) , pottery, mat weaver and so on 鈥 . I like handy crafts made from copper and silver , too But they are too expensive to buy 鈥 I still have other dreams which I have to save money for them : )
It 's really nice to cheat chat with you , too and thank you for your kind message .
    Cheers
Pary from Iran ( Ardebil )
Plus: Hope our dear supervisor don't mind my time to time messages to other friends . Yahh I 'm going to step on Natanael shoes . That 's all his fault ...just kidding
    See you !

    Hi Dominique
I think I belong to your same group. I am more interested in how pepole think rather than in their skin's colour or the country where they are from.
Bye the way, Why did you take the admission exam in a different country ?
    Ciao

  • Comment number 10.

    Hi Dear Dommi! Hi everybody!
People are very different all over the world. They have different skin color, the shape of the eyes, they have their own culture, language, beliefs, etc. But come to think of it all people are alike in certain ways. They are just human beings with the same feelings and emotions. They can love and hate, cry and laugh, they can be hurt, in pain, they can suffer or rejoice, they can be kind and have a heart of gold or they can be mean and evil and so on. As for me, it doesn't matter what nationality people are or what language they speak or what religious beliefs they have. To my mind it's important that people have their hearts in the right place. Like you Dommi I'm interested in people themselves. I like thinking that the people I meet are good unless (until) they prove otherwise. I believe there are much more good people in the world than bad ones. I hate violence, cruelty, callousness in people. I'm a very peaceful and peaceable person. I wish everybody well. I wish all people to live in Peace. Dommy, Is my point of view clear? And I've already told you were amazing, haven't I?

Dear Pary, My name Svetlana (from the old Slavonic language) means "the light one" or "the bright one".(By the way if you prefer you may call me Sveta. It is the short name from Svetlana) And it's wonderful you have an eye for art and all the beautiful things! Well done!

Dear Nastya, I didn't mention it but I've been taught English at school and at my first University, but to no avail. I assure you I knew very little of the language after my graduation. Perhaps you know how it is, when you have a new teacher every year and... Oh it's complicated. Maybe it was my fault or I was not interested...whatever. Anyway my true studying started two years ago. Have you heard anything about the learning a language via an immersion technique? You sort of submerge into the subject you are learning. I've tried it. I spent every spare moment reading in English or listening to audio. I went around with my headphones on always listening. Everywhere either on my way to work, or in a bus, or in a shop etc. English was always on my mind. For a year or more I've completely forgotten about TV, I've constantly been reading. So I guess the technique works out. Thank you Nastya again! I just wonder what native speakers think of my English and maybe I'm going to find out it some day. Who knows?

    See you guys!
    Svetlana, from Russia with love

    hello Dommi :)
it's nice to know you (even though i'm a new person here), i am Nicea from Indonesia, you can call me Nez :)
i agree with your focus, people are about what they have in their heart.
and about what a group i belong to, i think i'm belong to them who always full of love, who loves the peace ;-) (is it understandable?)
by the way, Dommi, yes you're wonderful :D do you have any blog except here?

for Nastya, hello how do you do :)
about the group that you belong to, me too.. i belong to a group of people who don't suffer of being alone. sometimes we need to be alone i think, and for several activities it is good to done it alone. i have experience it for several times. when there's no one in the same way with you and nobody would accompany you. but i enjoyed it :) how about you?

    hear from you soon

  • Comment number 12.

Hi Nicea! It's a pleasure to meet you :)

As I've already said it doesn't bother me to be alone. I've learnt how not to feel lonely and miserable being all by myself. My imagination can easily keep me company. I don't deny that all people need interaction but some people need it more than others. I have a few friends who feel they are about to go crazy when there aren't at least ten people around them. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a little but what I mean is that they can't stand being alone, they feel claustrophobic in an empty room, not in a crowd. I guess I don't feel that way because I'm used to being alone: when a child I was often left by myself and I always found what to engage myself into. There's nothing better than to read an interesting book in silence with no one around to bother you, don't you think? :)

By the way, I like your name, it sounds beautiful, like "nice". Could you tell us what it means?

    Best wishes,
    Nastya, Russia, Lubertsy

  • Comment number 13.

    Dear Dommi,

I'm sorry I couldn't answer you before, but I'm still here. And I enjoyed your writing again... you have an intimate language.
Your entries (this and the last one) made me think about the concept of Culture.
From my point of view, I see Culture (any culture) as a double-edged sword. People can be trapped into the bounderies of their own culture. This happens very often, for instance when we are ready to judge someone else because has a different style of life, different religion, different habits. First reaction to difference can easily be: I'm right, you're wrong; I'm good, you're cruel, and so on
At the same time, Culture and traditions can be something very positive. But only if we are able to share it, not only with family members, or intimates, but with "strangers" too. In this second way, Culture loses its closeness and becomes permeable.

Concerning me, to which group do I belong?
I don't belong to any precise group. I'm fussy and reserved as my father is, I'm apprehensive and a bit hysterical as only my mother can be... I'm all the persons I've met and experiences I've gone through so far.
I reckon myself a "work in progress".

My post is getting really too long, but let me write one last thing:
I think we are so different, as different are the places where we grew up and still live in. At the same time, I think we are similar, because I prefer too, to dig and find out what people have in their heart.

    Take care

    Elisa

I am a newbie with a same reason with another member here. Love to read and write and want to improve my writing skill. Hope I can share something here soon.

Anyway, back to Dominique, I was impressed by your post from the 1st and now. I think it's quite interesting topic, which I can learnt something from your culture. I have few African friends here. They are really nice people and smart same as you. As I can see African is a superstitious country which same with my country, Indonesia. I can understood what you said about witchery and religious ceremony. Feel so unreal with logic but so real when you feel it. It was happen to me when I was in Indonesia.

Anyway, was nice to meet you here. Looking forward for your new post.

Hi, dear Dominique:I think you are an educated, innocent and happy girl. Very interesting to study Pharmacy at the University but you can take up some course of studies to fulfill your "vocation" of being a chef. Answering your question about the groups, I belong to the one addicted to your blog, to the English language, I also like the silence but I like talking about everything in life with the aim of finding the good and possitive the others have. There is always something to share despite the country, culture, religion, age, etc. I totally agree with Svetlana. Best wishes for you. Tomorrow we'll celebrate Spring and the Student's Day.

A big leader on his time. Tell more about Pedro and his history, and his descendent (Catarina and others).

    Hi dear Dommi and friends!

Wow guys, what a subject you are discussing here! Every day it's getting more complicated, as I can see (thanks to Dominique!):) I must say you are real philosophers of our time :)! Every answer is so interesting and mature. Do we often stop just to think about things like this? I'm not sure, our life is too fast (unfortunately?!).

Well, back to Dommi's question, I'm quite a selfish person and I'm also kind of weird (people often say me I really am :). I probably belong to that sort of people who value their portability and independency. I like being among people, discussing, sharing opinions or just talking about something (sometimes just being silent and listening others) despite the fact I adore being alone (but I'm not a complete loner, I think :).

I belong to people who appreciate the other person's opinion and never be laughing and judging the other point of view or life style.

Dear Beatriz! Cogratulations with Student's Day and (that's just great) Spring! We have the 21st day of Autumn here - my favorite time of year by the way :).

Have a nice day guys, bye!

Hello You! Dear i鈥檝e got a terrible weekend, i鈥檓 happy to be back here, and happy to notice that when the wonderful supervisor is out, you bloggers鈥檙e keeping it up in a real muddle; Welldone! (^_^)
Let just says to the handy crafts鈥 lovers that i just like everything made with rattan. Especially when the craft looks very natural so that it could be associated with natural or artificial flowers. I鈥檓 not sure i like heavy stuffs for my decoration. The sofas are enough, i like good design of chair, looking 鈥榮lim and light鈥. In the Iranian festival, i remember i bought such a nice carpet, but in my way to home i forgot it in the taxi.
Nicea and Nastya, what are you talking about? Loneliness? Okay... i think i missed the point, just let us know what will be going on... (鈥 ,鈥)
Anyway, as we can read everybody here like to share cultures, but don't belong to " any precise group" as Elisa said. that鈥檚 great!
Want to know what happen to me this weekend? As my sister and i are preparing for our back to school in Dakar ( in Senegal), and as she鈥檚 just had her driving licence, we were going to the market looking for the last stupid and useless things we can buy, she or let鈥檚 say we hit a car, not really violently, but enough to break his lights and enough to make him hurt the car in front of him. ThAt Was T-e-R-r-I-b-L-e.
I鈥檓 thinking about the next topic, i think i will 鈥榮peechify鈥 on farming...

Hi Dear friend Natanael! Hi everybody!

Natanael, Thank you! I can see you are a very nice guy! It's so amaizing that you take interest in Russian history. I must confess I'm flattered. As for Pedro, I understood that you meant Russian tzar (czar or emperor)Peter I the Great (or Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov) (1672-1725). If you are really interested in this person you can try a google search for it. (for example en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_I_of_Russia)
Of course I would have told you a lot about whatever issue of the Russian history you are interested in including Peter I the Great but... First: I have so much information to tell you about him that I don't know where to begin. In any case I have to ponder over it for a while and try to collect my thoughts. But even then it's too difficult to tell a lot of interesting details about such a great historical figure as Peter in a nutshell. Second: I dont think I'm that good at English so that I could easily explain complicated and sometimes controversial issues. Third: I don't know whether I can do it in this limited space, in the blog which is Dommi's by the way. What I mean is I'll consider it a real pleasure to answer questions you are eager to learn in particular. I can clarify something you already know, and still want to know more about it. For example you asked 'Was he a great Emperor?' For this I can say yes he was indeed. Befor him Russia didn't have Navy (or sea fleet). Without it Russia was not as strong and significant empire compare to other European states as it became due to Peter. Peter made Russia a maritime power. He studied shipbuilding in Western Europe and then helped to build Russia's navy. Apart from ships Peter built cities as well. It is him who founded one of the most beautifull cities in the world - Saint Petersburg in 1703. Peter brought in Russia some European customs. In other words he did a lot for prosperity of Russia. He managed to bring it to a new higher level of development.

'Was he good?' was another your question, and I'm going to answer it as soon as I can. But it's all for now. Can't write any longer, feel so sleepy.

    See you soon

    Talha and Natanael!

Friends! Have you ever heard an expression "No pains, no gains!" (I don't know what exactly it is, an idiom or something, it doesn't really matter) The thing is you can't learn English or any other language without "any effort" how talha put it. You want to achieve some results then you have to work hard on it. There is no "easy way" guys. Sorry.

    Best wishes,
    Svetlana

    Dear Svetlana.

I'm very happy to read you !! First of all, forgive for the name of your Emperor. In Portuguese Peter is PEDRO, and i didn't know about the title "Czar", the origin is "Cesar" like the first Emperor of Rome without "e", but i think that in Russian is Tzar with "T". Very interesting...

Yes, i know a little more about your history. I like your culture and your history very much. The history of my country is very new (about 500 years aproximately), but yours....

Yes, i know about the Saint Petersbug and i really would like to know it, more than Moskow.

I studied about the real family (The Romanov's family) and the Bouchevic Revolution. Lennin and Stalin... Anastacia your princess Michail Gorbachov and others, but i prefer the old history. Peter I mainly and Catarina (I don't know if a Queen or Princess).

The soap opera was amazing although was very late (night), but i followed every single day.

Your country is very interesting and i saw some tv program about your history. There was a Cardeal (Rasputin) i think, it was terrible. (^_^).

Is it true that there is lot of time on your territory?

    Tell me more...

... and i'll looking for more information about Peter on the internet and if i have any doubt i'll ask you.

Good Night. (I think) it's around 7:00 p.m. here in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil and i'm still working...(^_^).bye bye
