October 7, 2010.

"At first I thought it was a joke", said the writer, Mario Vargas Llosa, when he heard the Swedish Academy's announcement: "you have won the Literature nobel prize 2010".

It鈥檚, definitely, the news of the year. 鈥淭he peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa is awarded today the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for his cartography of the structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt and defeat.'

Mario Vargas Llosa

The news flashed round the world. Today, when I woke up. I turned on the television and Mario Vargas Llosa was being interviewed on the radio. 鈥淚t was surprising, I didn鈥檛 expect to receive any prize鈥, said.

In Peru, everyone comment this great news, on internet, all social networks are published news about Mario Vargas Llosa; radio, television are dealing to get an interview. It鈥檚 really impressive all the media coverage.

Mario Vargas Llosa the journalist...

He was born in Arequipa (a province in sourthern Lima). Then he lived In Lima and Studied at military Leoncio Prado School. In his book 鈥淟a ciudad y los perros鈥 (The City and the dogs), 1962. He tell us about his experiencie as studient and how he could survived in that school.

In Lima he studied Laws at San Marcos University, in those times he had a revolutionary ideology, he was sympathizer of Cuban revolution, although after some years he changed his ideology to liberal right.

Not many people know, that Mario Vargas Llosa before to be a famous writer, he was a journalist. At the age of 23 he worked in 鈥淟a Cronica鈥 newspaper. This experience was determinated for him, because it was inspiration to write 鈥淐onversaci贸n en la Catedral鈥 (Conversation in the Cathedral), 1969. This is one of the best books, since my point of view the best. This book analize what happen behind political situation, sordid stories between yellow journalism, and cabarets and miserable people. It was monumental.

From the books to the films...

Did you know that Keanu Reeves was a character in a film based in a novel of Mario Vargas Llosa? Yes It did. The film is 鈥渢une tomorrow鈥,(1990) and is based in the book 鈥淟a t铆a Julia y el escribidor鈥 (Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter), 1977. It was a polemic book. This is a partly autobiographical story of the relationship between a young Mario and his aunt, a beautiful, sexy and sophisticated woman older than him.

The popular 鈥淣eo鈥 stars as 鈥淰arguitas鈥. (Mario Vargas Llosa was know as Varguitas). Unfortunately this film not was good for the critics, but it鈥檚 a good choose to see today!

鈥淧antaleon y las visitadoras鈥. (Captain Pantoja and the Special Service) was another film based in a book of the same name, this relate the life of a military Captain Pantoja who has to look after of prostitutes and accommodate the desires of the men of the Peruvian armed forces in the jungle. It was two versions, one first in 1975 and the second in 1999 and It was directed by the peruvian Francisco Lombardi in 1999. It had pretty succesful.

鈥淟a fiesta del chivo鈥 1996, (The Feast of the Goat) This book is based on the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, takes place in the Dominican Republic. It was made into film in 2006 and it was directed by Luis Llosa, novelist鈥檚 cousin.

The writer who wanted to be president...

In 1990 Mario Vargas Llosa was candidate for peruvian president. He could have been president, but the History did not wanted. He represented the center right, the other candidate was Alberto Fujimori (today arrested by corruption). Finally, At the end of this Alberto Fujimori won the elections.

Finally today justice was served and Mario Vargas Llosa is right now on the Olympus of world writers. Peruvian people will never forget this global event.

In a recentrly interview. He said: 鈥淚 am proud to be Peruvian as Machu Picchu鈥.

Mario Vargas llosa: novelist, essayist, politician, journalist, master and peruvian.

Congratulations!

Miguel

    Congratulations for the Nobel Prize!
This is the first time that I access your blog and I like it. I need to brush my English and I think that reading your posts will be a great opportunity. Thank you.
I'd like only to suggest that you change, in the first paragraph, the word "novel" for "Nobel" because it comes from the name of Alfred Nobel.
    Regards.

Topics is realy interested me, because literature I love very much. We have a 2006-nobel literarture awarded novelist, ORHAN PAMUK, as you are now.
I suppose they write their novel in a menner of originality and sincerity describing their society, folks and inevitable actual problems of human being about that anybody do want to mantion or manege to mantion.

Your, Miguel, this last post recalled me high culture diversity of the World.

I wish to read Mario Vargas Llosa's one book, one of your recomendation, if I have time.

    Congratulations!

    Best wishes.

    HI everyone!
I am really appreciative about your comments. Thanks Carossi for your observation. I corrected the mistake. I recommend you to read "La ciudad y los perros" (The city and the dogs) The argument is more universal. The story is about the experiences of student at Leoncio Prado school. The "dogs" of the novel are first-year cadets, rookies who have the barbarous punishments of their comrades in higher grades. Every character has a different behavour: There are "EL JAGUAR", (The jaguar), he is the rude boy, "EL POETA" (The poet), he was a studente who like writing erotic stories, "EL ESCLAVO" (The Slave), the silly of the group. It's a fantastic novel, and I sure you'll like it

Hi Miguel - and congratulations to the new Nobel laureate!
What a pleasant coincidence to have a Peruvian blogger of the month at the moment a Peruvian writer wins the most acclaimed international prize in literature! Thanks a lot for the information about Mr. Llosa! I must confess I hadn't known him as a writer before. I suppose that happens when you are not familiar with a poet's native language, and then, Peru is a very, very far-away country for me. But now everybody talks about him all around the globe, and I'm also going to include him on my list of must-reads.
Congratulations to you, too, Miguel. You are a great representative for your country in this international blog community!

    All the best,
    Elisabeth (Austria)

    Felicidades Miguel and Peru!
You did the right thing by reacting immediately to this news. You didn't miss the moment. You wrote in your first post that you are a journalist sometimes.Yes.definitely you are!
How nice and exciting it is for a country and its people to be spoken about all over the world in all the communication means - for winning the Nobel Literature Prize and not for daily bad and ugly news.
I must admit as Elisabeth did, that I didn't read anything of Llosa. But I noticed that at least 5 of his books were translated to my language and according to your recommendation I'll start with "The City and the Dogs"
    Bye bye

    Hello Miguel,
Thanks for your post!, while I was reading you post suddenly i began to collect some of Vargas Llosa's books that I have distributed in my room, I`m on the middle of "los cuadernos de don Rigoberto" (Don Rigoberto's diary). what a imagination! I love the way he describes situation in the way one can picture it, sometimes using peruvian-Spanish which gives it a funny touch!.

He really deserves this prize as a contemporaneous writer.
Besides, what a nice coincidence you being our Peruvian blogger and Vargas Llosa as a Prize winner also from Peru.
    We stay update!
    See you around
    xx

P.S: Miguel I like your writing style, descriptive and stepwise ...still the teacher should show up, don`t you think?

    Hi Miguel! Hi Everyone!

First of all, let me congratulate you and Peru on Mario Vargas Llosa鈥檚 Nobel Prize. I know you and all Peruvians feel joy and pride. It鈥檚 really great! You have every right to be proud of your national hero. Reading books is one of my greatest pleasures, and I鈥檝e read a lot of them, but I must confess I鈥檇 heard nothing of him before he won his award. It鈥檚 a shame. Now I鈥檓 going to rectify this omission.

Concerning writing, Miguel, what do you usually write about? Any particular genre? Are you planning on doing a career as a writer in future? Tell me more about it, I鈥檓 curious because, you know, becoming a writer is my lifelong dream. I haven鈥檛 written anything yet, but I hope I鈥檒l do one day. Having read so many books I have a feeling deep inside that I can write something myself. I can鈥檛 give writing much thought just now, but I find myself thinking of some characters, plots, and such very often. I can see myself as a writer in my mind鈥檚 eye. But maybe it鈥檚 nothing more than my wild imagination, or ambitions. I don鈥檛 know for sure whether I鈥檓 gifted by Nature or God with such a talent. And I guess I won鈥檛 know unless I try. So I鈥檓 going to give it a try.
Miguel, if you are serious about writing I wish you to become as successful a writer as Mario Vargas Llosa.

    Best wishes,
    Svetlana, Russia

Congratulations on your Nobel prize for literature. I m going to read something asap.
I understand that this achievement makes you very pride and rewarding but I think that we'll mainly remember Nobel Prize 2010 for peace prize. I don't know how the Nobel Prize process works, but I think it was a very challenging and sensible decision. What do you think ?

I think all the Spaniards are also very proud for the Prize. For us, Vargas Llosa is an old friend.

I've read six or seven of his books, since Pantale贸n y las visitadoras from Travesuras de la ni帽a mala.

I expected for a long time this Prize. Congratulations to Peruvian people and Spanish readers.
