Brazilian Popular Music or MPB
Dear Friend,
First of all, sorry for my delay, the day before yesterday was my Wedding Anniversary (14 years). It was a great day for us (Me and my family).
So, let's go ahead...
We can say that the MPB has emerged during the colonial period, from the mixture of various styles. Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, blended into our land, the popular songs, the sounds of African origin, military marching bands, religious music and classical music of Europe. Also contributed in this musical cauldron, with its typical indigenous chants and tribal grooves.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, stood out in the cities that were developing and increasing demographically, two rhythms that marked the history of MPB: lundu and popular song. Lundu, of African origin, had a strong character and sensual dance a rhythmic beat. Already a popular song, of Portuguese origin, brought the melancholy and spoke of love hit a calm and scholarly.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, comes the little cry or "Chorinho" (In portuguese) from the lundu mixture of popular song and dance hall in Europe. In 1899, singer composes music Chiquinha Gonzaga " Abre Alas", one of the most popular carnival music history.
In the early twentieth century begin to emerge the foundation of what would be samba. The hills and the slums of Rio de Janeiro, begin to mix the drumming and " capoeira" with the "pagodes" and the hits in tribute to the deities. The carnival begins to take shape with the participation of mainly brown and black ex-slaves. The year 1917 is a milestone because Ernesto dos Santos, the Donga, is the first samba ever heard: "No Phone". That same year, appears the first recording of Pixinguinha important singer-songwriter of Brazilian popular music of the early nineteenth century.
With the growth and popularization of radio in the 1920s and 1930s, the Brazilian popular music grows even more. In this epoch of the Brazilian radio, we highlight the following singers and composers: Ary Barroso, Lamartine Babo (creator of your hair does not deny), Dorival Caymmi and Noel Rosa Lupicinio '. Also arise as the great interpreter of Brazilian popular music: Carmen Miranda, Francisco Alves and Mário Reis.
In the 1940s stands out, the Brazilian music scene, Luis Gonzaga, the king of the bay. " Speaking of the setting of the dry Northeast, Luis Gonzaga is success with songs such as, for example, Asa Branca and Assum Preto.
While the ballad still be successful with Luis Gonzaga and the new successes of Jackson do Pandeiro and Alvarenga and Ranch, took shape a new musical style: the samba. With a slower pace and orchestrated, the songs were mostly of love. Also in the musical context: Dolores Duran, Antonio Maria, Marlene, Emilinha Borba, Dalva de Oliveira, and Angela Maria, Caubi Peixoto.
In the late 50 (1950), there is the Bossa Nova, a smooth and sophisticated style. It is noteworthy Elizeth Cardoso, Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto. Bossa Nova Brazilian beauties leads to the outside, a big hit, especially in the United States.
Television began to become popular in the mid-1960s, influencing the music. At that time, TV Record Festival organized the Brazilian Popular Music. These festivals are thrown Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Caetano Veloso, Edu Lobo. During this same period, TV Record launched the music program Young Guard, where emerge the singers Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos and singer Wanderléa.
In the 1970s, musicians are starting to hit the four corners of the country. Nara Leão recorded songs by Cartola and Nelson Cavaquinho. Hailing from Bahia, Gal Costa and Maria Bethania are successful in large cities. The same happens with Djavan (coming of Alagoas), Fafa de Belem (Para coming), Clara Nunes (Minas Gerais), and Fagner Belchior (both of Ceara), Alceu Valença (Pernambuco) and Elba Ramalho (ParaÃba) . In the Brazilian rock scene stand out Raul Seixas, Rita Lee appears in Funk scene Tim Maia and Jorge Ben Jor.
In the 1980s and 1990s begin to be successful new musical styles, which received strong influences from abroad. They are the decades of rock, punk and new wave. The live Rock in Rio, the early 80s, served to drive the rock nacional.Com a strongly urban theme and addressing social issues, youth and love, there are several bands. It is this period the group Paralamas do Sucesso, Legião Urbana, Titãs, Kid Abelha, RPM, Plebe Rude, Beth Hart, Capital Inicial, Engenheiros do Hawaii, Ira! and Red Baron. Are also successful: Cazuza, Rita Lee, Lulu Santos, Marina Lima, Lobao, Cassia Eller, Zeca Pagodinho and Raul Seixas.
The year 1990 also marked the growth and success of country music or country. In this context, with a strong romantic character, emerge in the music scene: Chitãozinho and Xororó, Zeze di Camargo e Luciano, Leandro e Leonardo and John Paul and Daniel.
At that time, the rap scene are: Gabriel, o Pensador, O Rappa, Planet Hemp, Racionais MCs and Hall 9.
The XXI century starts with the success of rock groups with topics aimed at teenage audiences. Examples: Charlie Brown Jr, Skank, Detonautas and CPM 22.
On the last years, we have had lots of famous singers and groups of Gospel Music, its an important music movement on our country now a days. Singers like Aline Barros e very important Gospel Music Group like Diante do Trono (In front of Throne).
As you can see we have a big mix of songs in Brazil.
At the end, I'd like to thanks to Wellington Costa (My great workmate) and one of the big know ledger of Brazilian Music that I know.
Wellington is from Bahia (State of Bahia) and he has the musicality in his blood. Thanks Wellington.
See you on the next post, people. Take care.

I have just one complaint. You didn't mention my favorite brazilian singer, Mariza Monte. I like her so much, don't you?
I don't have many opportunities to attend live singing shows, but I had the chance to attend hers. And it was great. The show was Infinito Particular and I attended it in Claro Hall in Rio de Janeiro. It's a great memory I have.
Keep on with your great blog my friend.
Best wishes from

@Alice! I like everything about Audrey Hepburn, her pronunciation included, she is one of my favourite actresses, and she’s great! You are right about ‘The riches also cry’, I do remember it very well. It was one of the first soap operas in Russia quite a while. Have you been to Russia since then? Have you improved your Russian since then?

nice to meet you. I cameacross your response in reply to the Natanael's question about your name. First let me say: Your name is a pretty and meaningful name!
As you said,it is related to " beauty " in general. now I want to explain a bit more about it in short and I hope you will allow me. As you might know, mahjabeen is a compound Iranian old name which used as a first female name, and it has entered into your language since "Farsi" was spoken in India in the long past. This compound word is divided to two words include "Mah"(the Moon) and "jabeen"(forehead). Both word are translated in Farsi. It is called because some one (female) looks like shiny and beautiful as" the Moon of the 14th night "!!! So, your beautiful name has an Iranian root and origin, and I'm happy for that!
It would be nice to hear if you nave something in this aspect.
Best wishes

What a great introduction to Brazilian music! There is such a rich tradition in your country for music and dance. I have some questions:
Does musical taste go across age groups? For example, do old people and young like the same kind of music?
On the radio do you hear mainly Brazilian music? Does it depend which station you listen to?
I'm not even going to correct any mistakes because your post is almost perfect! I didn't notice anything worth 'picking on' - choosing to explain or correct.
