Midwinter: the only way is up.

Post categories:

Abigail Abigail | 10:18 UK time, Monday, 20 December 2010

It's my last day on the blog - I'm off for Christmas holidays from today. But it's December, and so as one thing comes to an end another begins...

Last time Veronika posted, she talked about elections in Belarus yesterday, and I know that there's been some trouble on the streets of Minsk, after a demonstration yesterday evening. You can read more about it here
I hope you're okay, Veronika.

So that's not a very happy way to end my blogs for December. But Veronika has been an excellent writer, hasn't she? You really speak fantastic English, Veronika, and I know how hard you must have worked, to become so fluent. I've learnt a lot this month, including a new recipe (for draniki)! So even after this month's blog has finished, I'll be able to remember Veronika and Belarus, every time we have potato pancakes for breakfast.

A Christmas tree with tinsel and baubles.

Tinsel and baubles

This week is a very special week here in the UK and in lots of countries - Our Christmas day is on Saturday. (Veronika, I think you have to wait till January?) Everywhere is decorated with tinsel and baubles and fairy lights. We've got real snow on the ground outside, but that doesn't stop us adding fake snow indoors as well, made out of cotton wool.

In this country, most families open their presents on Christmas Day. As you all know, little children believe that Father Christmas/Santa brings their presents. Then at lunchtime we usually have a large family meal. We don't do much feasting in this country, so Christmas is huge for us.

If you celebrate Christmas in your country, please tell us about it.
Whether you celebrate or nor, December is a special month for us in the northern hemisphere. Tomorrow is the winter solstice: the shortest day and longest night. The sun is the lowest in the sky. But from the lowest point, it can only go up. As one year ends, another begins. And other words of wisdom... ;-)

If you're in the southern hemisphere, your days are about to get shorter of course :-(

Wherever you are, I hope you all enjoy the rest of 2010, and I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year!

    Dear Abigail,

here in the Czech republic, we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve - 24th December. We have special supper (usually fried carp and potato salad), sing carols by the decorated tree and than unwrap the presents which were under the tree. The Children believe that these presents are from Baby Jesus; but actually, nobody knows how does he look like - if like real Jesus or differently. I am not from a catholic family, so when I was a child I thought he looks like hedgehog in coat and cap (in Czech, hedgehod is "jezek", so it is very similar to Baby Jesus - "Jezisek"). It is sometimes very funny to talk with children about their ideas of Baby jesus :-)

    Merry Christmas,
    Tereza

Dear Abigail: Thanks a lot for your cooperation. Very interesting and useful your posts. It happens to me that I start to feel happier when we have the winter solstice (I don´t like winter), because as you say the way can only go up. It´s a possitive thougt that helps to face winter. Now, happily in B.A. Argentina we start summer. The best for you for the Next Year!!!! Beatriz.

    Hi Abigail,

Thank you very much for your Desember’s blog! Thank you for new vocabulary and grammar recommendations, they were usefull for me.
In Russian we celebrate Christmas after New year celebrate, on the 7-th of January. So it will be not soon. I think a New year celebration more popular in our country than the Christmas day. In the New year we give some presents for friends and relatives especially for children of course. Between the days from the 1 to 10 of January we have a long holiday.

    Happy Christmas!
    Marina from Moscow.

    Dear Abigail,

it really is a pity that your posts are coming to an end. But maybe you can come back again at another opportunity to teach us more English as you have been doing so well.

It was a great partnership between you and Veronika. You two gave us good things to learn and think.

Here in my country the Christmas celebrations take place on the night of 24th. Families usually have meals very late at night. The typical dish is turkey. But nowadays it's been changing to another bird: the "Chester". I'm not sure weather it really is another bird or a variation of a chicken....

I'd like to wish you a very nice Christmas full of joys and the company of your family and friends.

    See you around.
