Hello from Debrecen

Dear blog-readers and ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ learners. My name is Zsuzsa, I am a Hungarian student in the University of Debrecen in Hungary. My major is French and I have English courses also and I would like to transmit some events and curiosities from my little country, Hungary in this month.

June is a nightmare for Hungarian undergraduates. These days we have to prove our knowledge, it is the examination period at universities. Meanwhile it is the most colourful and eventful period in the life of my city, Debrecen. Hopefully, I will share interesting descriptions about the early summer's events.
In comparison with great and large cities, my native place is really calm despite the fact that it enjoys the second largest city title. The university plays an important role in the life of Debrecen. Festivals and cultural events colour our ordinary weekdays. The most well-known event is the Carnival of Flowers on 20 of August when carriages with full of flowers float on the main street accompanied by groups of dancers and majorette girls. At this occasion we celebrate the foundation of our state.
Firstly, I would like to present my favourite places in the city. One of them is the Great Forest (if we want to translate word by word, we call it Big Forest, but it is not a "Fangorn"-type!) and a tiny little pond (Lake of Frogs) near to my university. This natural shelter is called to be the lungs of the city. In 10 minutes, so in a relatively short period of time you can reach the little lake surrounded with weeping and oaks covered ivy from the noisy and busy centre of city.

Debrecen

Frogs croak and water-lilies float on the surface of water, children run around, they angle for tadpole and undergraduates study their notes of chemist or philology on their blankets.

Frogs

One of my favourite other places can be find in the area of university, this is the botanical garden. It is more calm than the Lake of Frogs (Békás-tó in Hungarian) and it is full with botanical curiosities. Although I am not really interested in botany, the variety of flowers, plants, trees is pleasant to eyes. In the examination period, a considerable number of students possess the fields but no one disturb others because benches are far from each other. Bushes, pinewood and birch-trees cover the pathways, larks sing and sparrows twitter. It is like a paradise.

    Hi Zsuzsa,

When I saw your name as this month's blogger I suspected I will be able to read about Hungary in June :) . I'm very glad that you're here and I have already waited for your 1st post.
I like Debrecen and the Carnival of Flowers is very beautiful.

I'm looking forward to reading your next post about you and Debrecen.

    Hello Zsuzsa,
Nice to meet you!! The Great Forest and the botanical gardens seem to be very idyllic, quiet places - ideal for studying. Your photos make me want to take a camera and a book and watch the frogs and spend the day in those parks!
Are you interested in singing? I'm asking this because I heard a choir from Debrecen at an international choral competition last year. Their name is "Vox Antiqua" and they did very, very well. There were two categories in the competition (folksongs and art songs) and the jury placed them second in both categories. I always take down notes and I've just looked them up: I entered a special praise for the beautiful, balanced sound, the rhythmic precision and the convincing dynamics.
So, congratulations on those musical achievements, Debrecen!
Looking forward to hearing more from you,
    Elisabeth from Austria

I am new to this site. Today I am fortunate to see this blog . I’m from Sri Lanka.

I was impressed by the panoramic pictures of your country. The greenery zone gave me as relief to my mind and eyes.. As you describes, botanical garden may be a wonderful place.
The clean water in the lake as well as the willows at the edge of the lake has added an extraordinary beauty to the environment.

Thank you for sharing this nice pictures with us.

    Hi Zsuzsa,
I read your blog. It is very interesting. It reminds my own University life. There are amazing places you always feel like to pay a visit or hang around. I always love to be at places of natural beauty. I live in Delhi, India. I am a regular visitor to Lodhi Garden which is in the heart of the city and near to my place. It is a natural park with monuments. There is a botanical garden inside also. Your blog inspires me to write.
    Regards

    Hi, Zsuzsa
It looks like the botanical garden in the city I live: frog’s puddle, weeping willows, old oaks etc. - peaceful and picturesque place in the centre of refuse dump called Samara city.
    Good luck

    Hello Zsuzsa,
I was over the moon when I saw a Hungarian name as the blogger of June. I'm from Miskolc. When I was younger and during my childhood I travelled to Debrecen a lot, because my father had relatives in your city. But after my parents had divorced I didn't visit to there. I was 19, when I spent some time in Debrecen. I remember the Piac street, the open-air pool, the Déry Museum and I also visited the university at once. I attended the university in Miskolc. Yes, this time is a nightmare for an undergraduate, similarly to Christmas time.

I'm looking forward posts and good luck for the exams!

    Hi Zsuzsa and everybody!

I’m glad to read your first post! Zsuzsa, could you please tell us, or rather write :), what your full name is, and how to pronounce it. Thank you for your so lively description of Debrecen. It’s so nice to learn about different cities at first hand and to feel their atmosphere. Looking forward to your next post to learn more :).

    Hi everybody!
Thanks for your comments, it is a huge thing for me that you liked my blog. Thank you!

My complete name is Zsuzsa Kozma but in Hungarian I have to inverse it, so in my identity card you could see: Kozma Zsuzsa. That's our order of names.
hehe... it is really funny if I want to transmit the pronounciation because the 'zs' does not exist in English, as I know, it is perhaps similar to 'g'.
The 'u' is short and 'a' is low not as the English 'a', it is totally different.
If you pronounce 'r' there is a vowel in the pronounciation before 'r'; my 'a' is similar to that vowel, but not the best.

Thanks for your encouragements. Today I took an exam, it was awful and it was by the way an English exam and so hard :) But my French linguistics exam was great, I received 5, here it is the best. I told that to my French friend who was really scared hearing that, because in France, the measure of notes is not the same as in Hungary. I explained him that 5 is not really wrong here. :-)

If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask.
    Zsú (my nickname) :)

It's funny, I knew only Hungarian capital, Budapest, which I believe is beautiful. Thanks to Google (almighty Google) I have found your city and am happy to learn more. It looks pretty.
I just discovered Learning English blog and I find very interesting.
I write from Toledo (Spain), also here is a very typical holiday (next Thursday) which is the Corpus Christi). Adorn the streets and there is a Catholic procession.

    Hi Zsuzsa,
This is Juan Carlos from Spain. I don´t know Hungary. Debrece seems a fantastic place to live and to study. In Madrid the winter is cold and the summer is boiling. However, we have two beautiful seasons: spring and autumn when you can hear birds, enjoy walking in gardens and the temperature is ideal. Streets are crowded with people and in my opinion these months are the best period to visit Madrid.
See you in your next post.

    Hi,
My name means lily. The name Zsuzsa originates from jewish, but I think my mother gave this name for me because at those time when I was born the name was trendy and she liked it. I think that is the only reason for it.
