Waris
Ali
Waris
Ali was born on December 7th 1939 in the Sylhet district of Bangladesh
and came to London in 1963. His
older brother Haris Ali had arrived about four months before.
He
came here to earn money by working in different restaurants. He
initially worked in Brighton and came to Gloucester in 1982 working
in a restaurant called Gandhi. He and his brother lived with a friend
Hafiz Ali.
In
1983 they opened their own restaurant called the Maharaja in Barton
Street. Waris was the chef and worked very hard.
Ill-health
Waris
Ali married in 1970 and has four sons and three daughters, all of
whom have been educated in this country.
His
son Chand Ali is in the restaurant business. Three of the children
have now married in Bangladesh.
After
working for so long and so hard, Waris became ill and had to give
up working. He used to be the chairman of the Bangladeshi Association
in Gloucester but is now just a member because of his ill-health.
