They
don't come any more eclectic-sounding than the impressive new collection
of songs from Terry Hall and Mushtaq, formerly of Brit/Asian musical
pioneers Fun-Da-Mental...
"The
feel and the mood of the album reflect world events with a subtle
message of understanding and acceptance..." |
Entitled
'The Hour Of Two Lights', the album is released this week
on Damon Albarn's Honest Jons label.
Starting life initially as a Hall solo project, the album began
to evolve and move in a completely new direction once Terry hitched
up with Mushtaq.
Incorporating
a myriad of musical influences from around the globe, most notably
Arabic, Jewish, Asian, Eastern European as well as the odd hip hop
groove, this is an album that sounds like nothing else around at
the moment - no mean feat in itself.
With a guest list of contributors that includes a 12 year-old Lebanese
singer called Nathalie, a blind Algerian rapper from Paris and a
troupe of Polish gypsy refugees based in the UK, the album also
features the afore-mentioned Mr Albarn moonlighting to great effect
with his melodica and THAT voice on a couple of tracks.
soulful
approach
"Well,
it is HIS label after all!", joked Terry on the radio show
at the weekend when he came in for our big interview.
The feel and the mood of the album reflect world events of the past
year with a subtle message of understanding and acceptance never
far away.
Standout
tracks include the jaunty Specials-sounding 'Ten Eleven',
'A Tale Of Woe' and the sumptious, Timmy Thomas-sounding
'Stand Together'.
Terry Hall has long been one of my favourite interpreters of song,
stretching all the way back to his work with influential Coventry
ska/punk hotshots the Specials, and then later with the rhythmical,
dancey grooves of The Fun Boy Three.
This
new collection of songs is a timely reminder of the man's unique
talent and soulful approach.
It's
good to have ya back, Terry, and well done to Mushtaq as well...
