Feeding techniques
The breeding sea birds of the northern Pacific islands have a number of feeding strategies. Puffins fly far out to sea, they can carry 20 or more fish in their beaks. Others, such as spectacled guillemots, feed close to the shore and only breed here and in northern Japan. Brunnichs and common guillemots can dive down to 25m (80ft) to catch fish for their chicks. Auklets have a different strategy, sieving the sea for crustaceans and small fish.
