Salamander stakeout
As soon as the ice melts in spring, woodland pools in Ussuriland become a hive of activity for Siberian salamanders. Undewater cameras show clusters of jelly-covered salamander eggs. The Siberian salamander is the only salamander known to live in the Arctic circle. Males proclaim ownership of a territory by waving their tails and opening their mouths in a wide yawn. If another male gets too close, the pair fight briefly, biting at each other's tails.
