Heron nestlings
A purple heron flies over the reed beds which surround the lagoons of the Caspian Sea. The reeds grow up to 5m high, providing perfect cover for nesting herons. Views of a purple heron nest with young chicks. Over 2,500 purple herons nest in the Volga Delta, often congregating in loose colonies in the centre of the reed beds, where the reeds offer the most protection. The purple colour of the adults makes them well camouflaged within the reeds.
