Laura Kenny: ‘Female athletes are giving up lots they really want’

Cycling superstars Laura and Jason Kenny talk to the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ for the first time since the birth of their second child Monty in July 2023.

Speaking to 5 Live Breakfast’s Rachel Burden, Laura explains why she’s made the decision to return to cycling with the aim of competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“It’s never been about this massive goal like it has been in other years, I’m not actually putting any pressure on myself whatsoever.â€

The five-time Olympic gold medallist had a miscarriage and an ectopic pregnancy following the Tokyo Olympics and says she is keen to support other female athletes who want to start a family.

She also calls for more open discussions around RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) which can affect female athletes periods.

“These females are giving up lots of things that deep down they really want, there are so many athletes that I hear who say they want to start a family, well if you don’t have a period you can’t start a family.â€
