Brain tumours: Campaigners hand petition into Downing Street demanding more research funds
Just 1% of cancer research funding has been allocated to brain tumours since records began
Campaigners have handed in a petition to Downing Street calling for more funding into research into brain cancer.
The petition by Brain Tumour Research received more than 81,000 signatures and wants the government to recognise research into the disease as a priority.
Nicola Nuttall has been a leading campaigner on brain tumour research, along with her daughter Laura, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2018 and died last May at the age of 23.
Speaking to 5 Live鈥檚 Lisa McCormick after handing in the petition, Nicola Nuttall said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and gets two per cent of funding.
鈥淗ow do those two things exist in the same way?鈥 she added.
Nicola was joined by patrons from Brain Tumour Research, Danny Clarke from the 蜜芽传媒鈥檚 The Instant Gardener, and Antiques Roadshow expert Theo Burrell.
Theo was just 35 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable form of the disease, glioblastoma.
鈥淲e鈥檙e doing this also for the people that have gone before that lost their lives鈥, she said.
鈥淭hose people really did want to make an impact, especially Laura.鈥
Remembering her daughter, Nicola said that Laura was, 鈥渧ery passionate about the fact that we had to continue her work and campaign鈥.
The Department of Health and Social Care said it was "investing" in research infrastructure and training.
