Male choir group: ‘It’s not just singing, it’s a brotherhood’

Choir singer on the importance of men speaking up to improve their mental health.

Lee is part of the Infant Hercules choir, a group of around 40 men from Teesside who sing and also encourage each other to open up and talk about difficult subjects.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Lisa McCormick, Lee said the choir are hoping to encourage more men to talk about cancer and seek the support they need, with the help of music.

“It’s just a group of blokes getting together, having a chat, having a pint, and trying to sing. No one judges anyone.

“Singing’s just a little part of it, it’s the camaraderie. You could say it’s a brotherhood, a 24-hour helpline”.

When Lee was first diagnosed with an incurable form of blood cancer in 2020, he didn’t want to talk because of ‘male pride’, but now wants to encourage other men to open up.

“I’d say to anyone if you’re worried about something … just talk.

“If people hear me speak, get help and talk, if that helps one person there will have been some good out of it”.
