Aphantasia: ‘Being able to picture things in your mind feels like a magic trick to me’
Most people can picture images in their minds: what a banana looks like, or even the face of a loved one, but not everyone can.
People, like Mary Wathen, who can't visualise anything in their minds eye have a condition called aphantasia.
Speaking to 5 Live Drive’s Clare McDonnell, Mary said that the idea that people could bring up images in their heads felt like a “magic trick” to her.
“I think it’s probably an important lesson to us all to never jump to a conclusion about what somebody else is maybe thinking”.
Mary also spoke about the limitations of aphantasia: “I’ve got two young children, I’d love to be able to relive those moments by bringing the visuals back up, and I can’t do that”.
