Smoking ban: Will it work?

Aisla Rutter and Simon Clark discuss the effectiveness of the proposed smoking ban

Ailsa Rutter, from smoking action programme 'Fresh' and Simon Clark from smokers’ rights group 'Forest' discuss the effectiveness of the proposed smoking ban.

It would prevent anyone born on or after the 1 January 2009 from buying tobacco ever in their lives.

Supporters argue it'll improve the health of the nation and reduce the burden on the NHS but critics say it reduces personal choice.

'Fresh' is a programme funded by the NHS to reduce smoking. Ailsa said she's been personally affected by exposure to smoke throughout her life:

"Both of my parents were chain-smokers. I nursed my dad from COPD. I've lost my auntie from COPD. There are so many people in my family that have been negatively impacted by smoking", she said.

But Simon thought differently, arguing "enough is enough":

"You cannot create this two-tier society of adults where some adults are allowed to purchase tobacco and other adults can't", he argued.
