Shakira Akabusi on perinatal OCD: ‘It was so overwhelming and isolating’

Shakira Akabusi talks about the debilitating OCD.

Shakira Akabusi talks about the debilitating OCD which developed after the birth of her first child. She shares how it impacted her life.

She has now recovered since then and Shakira describes herself as a “mum on a mission” to shatter the stereotypes around being a mum, in particular physical and mental wellbeing.

Speaking to 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty, she said: “OCD can manifest in many different ways. I had tapping and counting.”

“It impacted absolutely every aspect of my life.

“Now as an outsider, I can speak about it, and I can hear that it might sound ridiculous but it feels so real when you’re the one that’s living it. And the thought of not doing your compulsions is utterly terrifying.”

According to Mind, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a type of anxiety disorder. Perinatal OCD is when you experience OCD during pregnancy or in the first year after giving birth.
