Dear Natanael, I visited your country three times and it is really a paradise plenty of nature and beautiful landscapes, but what I like more is the people. I have very good friends there and everytime I can feel the warm welcome, solidarity, and their eager to live intensely.
Maybe only coffee, football and carnival are well known all over the world, however Brazil have a lot of thinks to offer to the world. Culture is also present through good writers and poets, films, excellent composers, and so on.

I've a secret, i've a great secret: i'm in love with Bonito! Don't tell anybody, it's a secret. Tell me more about it Natanael! What does Bonito mean? Beautiful? if that, it is. Really. Is it an accessible area? It looks like it's just a submarine place.. waouh incredible. I do understand why you say people "believe" that God made the rest of the world in 6 days and took a rest in BONITO the 7th day.

Lots of thanks for this informative post - it helped me to fill some gaps in my knowledge of Geography and made me look at the map one more time.

I've just remembered one more thing with which I associate your country - Brasilian series (I mean television ones). They were extremely popular in Russia when I went to primary school (well, maybe they are still popular but now they have more competition though Russian series leave much to be desired). I remember that there were a lot of magnificent shots of rich Brasilian nature, of famous Brasilian beaches and your beautiful capital. These shots made a deep impression on me as a kid, I really thought it was a paradise or at least a fairy tale.

I'm looking forward to reading your next post (the topic "music" is great:)).

Yes, Bonito is far from here, you know Brazil is a big country. Many Brazilian Citizen born and death and don't know 20% of Brazil. I'm blessed man,I know a little more, but I didn't get the opportunity to know Bonito, a friend of mine had this opportunity and sent a post card to me. It's amazing. It's really a paradise.

It's very accessible, there is no problem to go there...

It’s not a secret for me that your country Natanael is stunningly beautiful. I should say I grew up watching those Brazilian serials on TV that Nastya mentioned. We called them soap operas. They gave us a perfect view of your vigorous cities, long amazing beaches, and beautiful people of course. If my memory serves me right the first serials began right after the Soviet Union collapsed, the Russian people had very hard times dealing with many difficult issues. And those serials were like a breath of fresh air at that moment, they helped take people’s minds off their difficulties, they showed them altogether different life, a different – very beautiful world, paradise, fairy tale whatever you name it. That is why those serials were so popular. And now I’m looking forward to seeing your little popcorn!

@ Emat from Kazakhstan! Nice to meet you countryman! I’ve just found the comment you wrote to me by accident. You know, when we have another post from our blogger I hardly ever read comments on previous one. I could have overlooked it! I’m glad I didn’t though. To be honest, I didn’t get what you ment. Not quite. As far as I know the English have different pronounciation in different parts of the country. I think we had better ask our Teacher about it.

@Dear Alice if you happen to read this, lend us a hand please. Would you be so kind as to read Emat’s comment number 42 on the first Natanael’s post and clarify on this issue. Is it a right thing to do, I mean not to pronounce ‘t’ in words?

In the meantime, I have something to tell you about pronounciation. Emat, have you ever seen the musical film ‘My Fair Lady’ (1964, starring Audrey Hepburn)? If not, I’d advise you to watch it in English of course. It would be useful for all English learners, I think. The main male character Mr.Higgins is a professor of phonetics, linguistic expert. He is able to define from which part of Britain the person is by the way he speaks and from which social class too. He teaches a poor young lady whose name is Eliza Doolittle how to speak proper English. In the beginning she has a ghastly accent indicating her low social status and in the end she speaks perfect English and might be taken as a duchess. I like the song in which Mr.Higgins has the line ‘Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak?’ He says so about the variety of ways to pronounce words improperly.
As for my name, I like it better the way it is - Svetlana, but you Emat feel free to call me the way you like the most, Sve,lana, Sveta, I’m sure speaking Russian you know a bit more ways to call me.

Normally, series are made in USA. The name in Brazil is "novela" or in english "soap opera". There some important diferences between them. The "novela" is shorter them a Serie (on use), and its more elaborated them a serie, in my opinion.

I like the actress Giovanna Antonelli (o Clone) very much, she is so beautiful. But maybe you know nothing of serials i've named, as far as i know men aren't very interested in such films, are they?

Well, i like films, we've just saw a national film called "Tropa de Elite 2". very interesting.

I like soap operas like Por Amor, o Clone, Tropicaliente, Lacos de Familia, but you know that they are little bit old for us. The TV channel that we called "GLOBO" (the main tv channel in Brazil)has 3 kind of Soap opera's time a day (soap opera of 6 p.m.; soap opera of 7 p.m. and soap opera of 8 p.m.). You're right i like soap operas, but i prefer cinema (movie)and of course footbal, music, beach, books and all.

There no problem to talk about this theme and others not so good...
As i told on last post, "Huston, we have lots of problems" and the crimes are one of them.

In fact, this is a good opportunity for demystify some informations about this theme.

Yes, we have crimes, but like big cities around the world. We some characteristics about some cities here, like Rio de Janeiro. It's a long text, but i'll try to summarizing, ok!?

The Rio de Janeiro for exemple is kind of city "Squeezed" between Montain and Sea, so on the beggining of last Century we had a big migration from lots of parts of Brazil to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, or course without plan.

So, years later, we have slumbs and poor areas, and a complicated social problem. From Real Plan (Our economy plan) and the action of our last two presidents (Fernando Henrique and after, Lula we are transforming it, but we have lots of work to do...

Well, it's becoming to a new post (^_^).

About the English have different pronunciation in different parts of the country: of course I know about this moment, I know that the native speakers might have an individual uniqueness in their pronunciation as well, it's not only the English I think. When I asked you a question, for me it was interesting your opinion as Russian-speaking person, I wondered if you have the same problems like mine by hearing. And I know what will be our Teachers' answer; I read lots of advices from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Learning English about it. ...Ok, forget it.
I had in Ivanovo the Teacher from Los Angeles, so she lost any hope to help me somehow in my endlessly questions that she simply started in the end say to me, "Why don't you just shut up?", when I was starting to mumble my next usual question in class.

There's is a curiosity about me, I'm a firstborn of a family of firstborn married with a firstborn of a family of firstborn (my wife is a firstborn from her family), her father and her mother, too. My father and my mother, too.

@Dear Emat! I got your point now. At least I think I got. You know, I haven’t given much thought to this issue, to be honest, so long as I can catch what people say I don’t care. It depends on how fast someone speaks, how he/she articulates. If I, for example, listen to an audiobook, I usually hear every single word, because while reading a text an actor/actress pronounces the words distinctly. But when a person speaks too fast, or too low his/her speech may appear like a blur to me. I then can understand the general meaning, the main point. It’s difficult to take apart every word (let along whether they say ‘t’ in the word ‘little’ or not:)) When watching a film I sometimes can’t get what they say, and then subtitles might be of great help. Anyway it’s a question of practise. The more you listen to English speech, the more you are able to understand.
About your teacher, may I assume she wasn’t too patient? To my mind a competent teacher would never do that. I consider it is rude to say so. Not good of her. But don’t hold it against her, let it go. If you are so inquisitive and teachers sometimes can’t answer your questions (bear in mind that they can’t possibly know everything) you always can figure things out by yourself. There are lots of sources for that. Keep looking for answers and sooner or later you are going to find them.
And one more thing, you said you had read lots of advice but what about books in English? How many of them have you read? Reading in the original is the most effective way to learn a language. I can tell you that. Good luck countryman! Take care.

I saw a theater play based on the same story like the movie ‘My Fair Lady' last year. I was realy impressed. It is a hard job to get rid of something like wrong/incorrect or just other pronunciation. If you look around you, I'm sure, in the most cases you would be able to say from which part of the country the person comes from. In many cases you can even say to which social status he/she belongs to or was born in. For instance in Germany you can easy identify persons who were born in east/north/south of Germany. Each region has it one dialect and slang. If you live in the country's south sometimes there are realy problems to understand someone who comes from north. My frind grow up in north of Germany and moved to south at the age of 35. At the beginning he had understanding problems.

I read the discussion about the Brazil soap operas. I can just repeat the words of the other girls from ex UdSSR. After the country (UdSSR) had broken down, this was maybe the first thing imported from other countries. At least it was the first that everybody, wealthy or poor, from Moscow or Wladiwostoc, could see. I can remember that every evening at 18:30 we (women) were sitting in front of tv and watching the soap operas. The old good time :-))

there is no secret about my life. To answer your question, I don't speak Russian in my daily life. My boyfriend is German, so we talk in German. Since my whole family: my parents, brother, uncles, aunts, grand parents, live in Germany I don't have much contacts to my birthplace. Speaking with my parents or brother I use the language which appears first in my mind. Sometimes I start the sentence in Russian and end in German. Hence my speaking skills are loosing. But I understand most of the thinks and can read books. There is an internet page, I'm sure you know it, odnoklassniki.ru where I can find old friends. But after so many years it is not always easy to keep in touch. I hope I could answer your questions. If you have any more, just ask.

I agree with your advice to Emat regarding learning a language with help of movies or books. My first english books were from Agatha Christie. They are easy to understand and to follow. Moreover they are not too thick and the success to complete it is not far away. I think at the begining it is even not so important to understand every word, sentence or the use of a particular time. But it is how I learn english, everybody has his one way.

Back to you I think Brasil is a very different country itself. From the North to the South, from the West to the East you have so different places such as sandy beaches and pantanal too.
I've been to the "Green Sea" and I made some short guided explorations from Manaus. Apart from the humidity I remember feeling excited but also scared from the wildlness of the "Green Sea"

Unfortunatelly not. As you know, the Brazil is a big country and i know Brasilia (our capital) some cities around there like Luiziania and Anapolis.

I know the state of Rio Grande do Sul (some cities of course) like Gramado, Canela, Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi, Caxias do Sul, the beautiful region that we called " the wine region ".

I know some cities of the state of Minas Gerais; São Paulo and Espirito Santo, and of course lots of city of my own state (Rio de Janeiro).

Today, It my first writing in this ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ student blog, I am from Venezuela (but I was living in Madrid 5 years ago. I have never visited to Brazil, but in the the south of Venezuela (boundaries between Brazil and Venezuela), there is a beautiful place called Guiana Highlands contains the northern fringes of the Amazon Basin and Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall as well as tepuis, large table-like mountains.

Now I'm reading Evelyn Waugh (The Loved One) and I found some books of Sir Pelham Grenvill Wodhouse in English, it's good things and funny. Also I like to read the interviews from Esquire (magazine): here the meaningful answers to good questions usually it's from the persons, who are never short of something to say: I think it's also a good way to study English, at least it isn't boring to read.
About my Teacher: it's ok, she allows such expressions in cases when she could hardly control her laughter...

I just want to say that your town is really amazing and charming. And its beauty is typical Russian beauty - quiet but powerful. I love Sergiev Posad, I've been there many times and I often pass it on the way to my parents' country house. Besides, it's my father's native town and my grandmother lives not far away from it.

I agree that SP is very beautiful and basically that's the main reason why I like living there. The matter is that I work in Moscow and it takes me almost 4hrs to get to work and back. But I like the quite tempo of life in SP.

@Lyudmila: I just can't believe you work in Moscow and spend so much time to commute to your workplace! Never again will I complain about the time I spend on the road! I believe that after the crazy pace of life in Moscow you really appreciate the quiet pace of life in your town :) But for some Muscovites it's very difficult to get used to this regularity. My Mum can't stand driving through the SP's center - the speed limit is almost everywhere 40 km/h, local drivers are not in a hurry and there are plenty of traffic lights (she calls SP "the town of endless traffic lights" :)).

I will find post no 42 and comment! I just read your message and had a very nostalgic moment thinking about watching a Brazilian soap opera while living in Russia. It was called something like 'Bogati toje plachet' (The Rich also cry??). Do you remember it? What was its Brazilian title? My Russian language was pretty awful so I used to try and guess what was going on just by looking at people's facial expressions. It wasn't too difficult.

As for your recommendation to watch 'My Fair Lady' - I agree. It's one of my favourite musicals. Do you like Audrey Hepburn's pronunciation? It sounds very clear.
