Hi, Welcome Abigail. Your view from the window is very different to what we see here in Uruguay. Now in spring near to begin summer, yesterday and today we had the first days of high temperatures, in Montevideo where I live the max. was 30 yesterday, today a litlle less. But in the north departments (500 kms. distance) the temperature is higher.
We need some days of rain. Yesterday some forest fires, typical of summer begun, many caused by negligent people.

We got used to snow and everything around is white here too, but we are not snowed in. We don’t wear bin bags (just warm clothes and shoes) or panic buy:) But it is sooo cold for me (about -15 last days) that I prefer staying at home under the blanket to all outside activities.

I live in Russia, and such weather is absolutely normal for my country (if we're talking about winter, of course)). It means that everyone here is ready to meet winter and has some warm clothes and shoes, and hasn't to put bin bags on he's/she's feet.
Of course, we have some problems with commuting because all roads are under snow and it's a little bit difficult to reach work/university/home etc., but salt usage and special vehicles make it easier.
However, you should understand - I'm talking about the city of the second magnitude in Russia (Saint-Petersburg). People, who lives far from big cities, have such difficulties, as lack of food in local stores, transport and communication problems and so on.
If they don't have any problems with communication, they spend their time in Internet, trying to clear up, where is the coldest weather now in Russia)) It's funny, because an ability to bear a coldness depend on sucn thing as humidity. So, the same temperature in different parts of country could be felt in different ways.
I don't like winter, by the way. Winter activities, like snowball fights or snowman making take a short time. The rest time it makes everyone depressed and sleepy usually.

So, that's the way we live.

I'm from Russia, from Moscow. And first of all I'd like to say some words about the weather in Moscow. It's awful I should say, because it is very very freezy and there is no snow at all! We are waiting for it every day, but... Our weather forecasters promise it daily. Unfortunately nowadays we cannot make such a beautiful photo but some day will do!
And now let me talk about the 2018 Football World Cup which will take place in Russia. I'm not a football fan, but all in all I'm very proud that my country will host it. I'm sure that everything will be held at high level and everybody ( from Russians to foreigners) will enjoy it greatly.
So, Abigail, thank you for your post, new expressions you've given to us, they are very useful for those who work hard at improving English.

I'm listening to the rain outside and dreaming about snow. I don't like cold weather, but I like snow very much :).People in my country are used to snow, but the weather is strange in Bulgaria this year. It's so warm that every day we have temperature records in different parts of the country /yesterday it was 25 degrees in a small town at the Black Sea coast/.

I am in France and the weather here is not quite normal as well. Yesterday we woke up to see everything outside covered with snow. But we werent as snowed in as you. It was very beautiful!!!! But it turned out a catastophy for those who were taking a car to move somewhere. There were enormous traffic jams everywhere. Franch people like Enlgishmen are not ready and not used for such conditions. It makes me laugh, because Im Russian and snow is an ordinary thing for me. By the way it melted in several hours and the life returned to normal.

Dear Abigail,
I am living in Japan, so it means that here we also are in the middle of winter.
In my city we are suffering some cold now, but still we are not snowed in. Normally, in December we have 10 or 20 centimeters of snow which is no too bad, however the problem comes early in the morning when it seems that we are walking on patches of soap and a thin suface of ice is covering the streets.
I hope that this winter would be not so crude.

thanks for the useful blog and new words,well here in Sydney ,Australia were I currently live we never get snow.in fact it doesn't snow in any Australian major city and I have met people who have never seen snow! no wonder I never heard of the word "snowed in".since we are in the southern hemisphere we are sunbathing at the beautiful beaches when Europe is snowed in ! that makes Australia a top tourist destination in January .so if flights are not canceled and you can make it to the airport ,why not joining us down-under?!! don't forget your sun's cream but!

Hello Abigail! Nice to e-meet you!! It has poured down here in the Po Plain in the last couple of days. It is pretty cold especially in the morning and we practically keep our home heating on like 24/7. We just switch it off when we go to bed. I feel like I am going to learn a big bunch of new words with your posts and I thank you in advance for that. Hope the weather has improved in the UK and have a great weekend!!!

Your photo is beautiful! Sometimes we have a case when view on window or photo is more greate that a wether is in fact. And a pictures of a winter are so offen.
Abigail, about bin bags I have had similar experience but not in winter and in summer. There were some people wore bin bags on feet because it was very strong rain and there was river on a road.

Nice to meet you! I’m Svetlana from Russia. Regarding the 2018 Football World Cup. First I must confess that I’m not a football fan. I’m an ice hockey fan. I can’t help being an ice hockey fan since both my son and my husband are the ice hockey players. Anyway, I’m glad that this event (2018 FWC) will take place in my country. On the one hand it’s good because several new stadiums will be built in different cities and massive investment will be made in development of sport in Russia in general and football in particular. On the other hand I’m a bit disappointed because all these good things are going to give my native town a wide berth. There is not a single decent sport arena (I mean really big and significant) in my town and so many young boys and girls who are willing to go in for sport can’t do it. That’s why I’m a bit sad.

As for the weather, today is a lovely day in my place, -5C plus a little snow. It’s been markedly colder for the last few days (from -20C to -25C), it seems we have a respite now, which isn’t going to last according to weather forecast. In spite of the low temperatures sometimes (it’s unusual start of the winter this year as well) I like winter very much. When the weather is nasty I usually sing a song. It’s the well-known song in Russia from a Soviet film – masterpiece of Soviet cinema. The song has lines something like: ‘Mother-Nature hasn’t got a bad weather, any weather is blessing (means God’s grace). Rain or snow, whatever the weather one should gratefully accept it’. I don’t know whether I have managed to convey the meaning, but it’s funny, when I get annoyed with some horrible weather and start complaining about it, these lines always come to my mind, and I somewhat calm down. The thing is we Russian are never satisfied with the weather. Either we are too cold, or too hot, or too wet, or there are too many mosquitos and midges in summer, or too much something else… Strange people we are!:) The Russians:))

How lucky you are , you live in such a green place . I wish to see your local place in spring and summer . You made me laugh when you said poke wearing bin bags ! But after reading your complete entry it was reasonable . Some times to be snow in isn't so bad , is it ? I love to be at home in snowy days next to heater with a cup of tea , don't you ? As one of the readers mentioned I think I 've heard your voice already maybe in some of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ LE down loads … .Hope to hear more about you and your Job ! i am so glad to have you as my my teacher. thanks for your information about the weather situation in England. as you described the weather is so cold there. i tel you congratulation the first snow comming. until the snow have came down in Europ here in Daikundi the weather became so cold. all the people have wore warm cloths and getting prepration for coldest days of winter. after this time and comming of snow in the land our ways will be band and road transport will be faced with many problems and some time it will remaining staied. the costs of things actualy food and fuel is raising and people in some time will be faced with shortage of these.
