Hello and Welcome :)

Veronika Veronika | 00:40 UK time, Wednesday, 1 December 2010

Hello, everybody!
I'm very pleased to meet you as a blogger of this month:)
My name is Veronika and I'm from Belarus.

After saying this, I usually hear (from strangers, of course:) the question "What is Belarus?"
It is my native country, as you may guess. It might have been also known recently as the host of Junior Eurovision - 2010, but I'm here to tell you more about this wonderful place.
Paradoxically such an unknown land is situated in the center of Europe (we think so here at least:), bordering upon Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

It is a country that formed a part of different states, but is mostly associated with USSR and Russia. It is a country speaking two languages (Belarusian and Russian) and having the only one President (Alexander Lukashenko) during its sovereign being. Belarus gave the Europe a printing pioneer (Francysk Skaryna) and had been waiting for a mobile communication for about 15 years after it had appeared in the world. We have many modern sport centers, but we got the first hypermarket just about 5 or 6 years ago and the first 5-screens(and still have no more) cinema just in 2008. The high buildings from glass stand nearby grey houses of Stalin and Hryshchev times here, just as the soviet mentality is still getting on with progressive ideas.
I would like to tell you about our weekdays and holidays, traditions and innovations, to show you sights as well as the places where we live, introduce our national cuisine and look at our specific fashion on the streets and in the shops and sure reveal the secret of Slavic beauty. So I invite you to explore Belarus and Belarusian lifestyle with me this month.
See you soon,
Yours,
Veronika

    Hello, Veronika!
    Nice to meet you.
Though I come from Russia, I cant boast knowing much about your country, so will be interesting to get some more information about it from within. And then to compare with life in Russia. By the way, do you think it's better to live in Belarussia then in Russia?

Hi Emat! Sorry for the delay. I promised to answer you. Here I am! I always try to make good on my promises if nothing interferes. So where were we? I listened to the audio files you gave me references to. Thanks. I think my name was pronounced as Sveh-lana. Alice told the same, didn’t she? Regarding the books you mentioned, I haven’t read them. Are they worth reading? By the way, are you in Ivanovo now? The weather’s cool, isn’t it?

    Hi Veronika,

nice to meet you. Your introduction is very good, I am looking forward to other posts.

I am from Central Europe (Czech Republic), so I know some things about Belarus but not so much. Now it seems, I will learn more :-) By the way, I was very near to Belarus this summer - we were in Bialowieza forest in Poland with my boyfriend and we went to see the state borders. It seemed to be very strictly watched, so I remembered times some twenty years ago in Czech republic...

I do not want to talk about politics, but what is your opinion at Lukashenko and his regime? Here in Czech, he is considered to be slightly a dictator - but is it really true? I am really interested in opinion of Belarusian people themselves.

    Have a nice day,
    Tereza

Hi Veronika! Thanks for your blog. I am really curious to know more about your Country! Are Belarusian and Russian similar? Where have you learnt English? I heard in that part of the World people learn many languages! Is that true?
I think there are enough questions for now...
I hope to read you soon!
    Cheers

Hi Veronica ! What city do you live? I was born in Moscow but consider possibility to move to another city for working and living. I've found one place in Minsk. Could you describe the advantages and disadvantages of life here - costs, traffic, criminals, corruption, may be something else?
Do you recommend to live in Minsk honestly ?

    Hi Svetlana,

Yes, I saw your comments in my last post...(^_^).

Many thanks for your words. I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Here, we're about to finishing the Spring, It's almost Summer. The Christmas here is very funny due to this... Shoppings and others things and places are very very coloured and light. It's a happy time.

We had problems with a violence in the slums region here, but it seems that everythings is controled. Thanks God for it.

Well, i really love my family. I know that i have a treasury, and i thank God every single day. But, in fact, i was born into a the same family, so i'm just reproducing the same thing. It's good. Isn't it?

About the Photos, Your computer is ok. The photos is ok for me, but when i did the upload, i don't know what happened. I have lots of photos in my ORKUT (Natanael Santos) - lots of photos for the Last Lidia's Birthday Party. It was great !!!

You'll see my mother, my father, my mother in law, my father in law, my friends, me, Evelyn and Lidia have fun.

Also, i'm following the news about the wether there. It's very cold there.
It's a pleasure to talk to you Svetlana. God Bless you and your family.

Cheers - Natanael - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

    Hi Veronica!

Lovely to meet you here. I'm really looking forward to finding out more about Belarus. I once went to Minsk on a train from Moscow (1992) but could only stay one night so didn't get to see much.

My first question - what is a signature (classic) Belarussian dish?

I would love to learn how to cook something Belarussian!

    Best wishes

    Poka!

    Alice

Hi Dear Svetlana, thanks for your answer, my friend. All of these author's books are worth reading, I think. And the several of my much more favourite ones I list somewhere here in an comment to Jan's Blog about books. As a rule, at first I'm reading the ones in Russian; if a book make an inpression on me, then I find them in English.
Yes, I'm in town, Svetlana, and I'll be here till the 14th December.
If you want to see me I often come to Wi-Fi centre in PLAZA's bookshop section; in upstairs. If you see there some a long-haired guy with notebook who outwardly resembles Navajo chief - immediately freeze in front of him and wait: if he long drawn-out pronounce to you, "Please, come forward!" - then it will be me. Ok?
    Best wishes,
    Emat.

Natanael, I feel very responsible taking the baton from you, since your blog was great!
Victoria, it’s hard to say whether it's better to live in Belarus then in Russia, so as I have never lived in Russia, just visited couple of times:)
Bahij, yeah, we are quite a sporty nation ))) and Francysk Skaryna is a person who established printing in Europe, I hope I’ll have a chance to tell more about our famous people.
Damoe , Welcome to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Learning English! I’m sure you’ll really love it!
Tereza and Leonid, I’ll try to answer your questions in my later posts ;)
